Warning! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*As shown by Thunderbolts*, the MCU’s Sentry is powerful enough to match all the Avengers’ power, but beating them in a fight would come down to very specific conditions. Thunderbolts* centers around a team of anti-heroes with similar abilities and personalities. The тιтular anti-heroes bond over these similarities, and they’re able to defeat one of the MCU’s most powerful characters with an unexpected approach. By the end of Thunderbolts*‘ third act, the team has grown close together, and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine announces that they have been rebranded as the New Avengers.
Fourteen months after the events of the movie, Thunderbolts*‘ post-credits scene reveals that the New Avengers are housed in Val’s Watchtower, and that they have become a rival team to Sam Wilson’s official Avengers. Fortunately for New York, Robert Reynolds’s Void alter ego hasn’t returned, but he hasn’t been able to use his Sentry powers either. While a direct Thunderbolts* sequel is unlikely, Bob might reawaken his Sentry persona when the New Avengers fight Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which may provide a clear comparison between Sentry’s power level and that of the Avengers.
Sentry’s Powers Explained (In Thunderbolts* And In The Comics)
Sentry Is One The Most Powerful Characters In Marvel Lore
Thunderbolts* establishes that Robert Reynolds is the only survivor of Val’s Sentry project. Whereas all other test subjects died, Bob gained the power of a thousand suns. When Bob takes control of his powers, he’s probably faster, stronger, and more durable than any other Avenger. Sentry’s skin is impenetrable, his reflexes make him untouchable, and he can fly. Val’s dream of creating a superhero as powerful as all the Avengers combined is fulfilled in Thunderbolts*. Although Sentry doesn’t use his powers too long in Thunderbolts*, it’s clear that he’s way stronger than the likes of Thor, Captain Marvel, and Hulk.
Sentry has killed Carnage and Ares effortlessly, and he destroyed Asgard without breaking a sweat
Sentry is even more powerful than his comic book counterpart in the comics. In Marvel Comics lore, Sentry’s power level is likened to the energy of a million exploding suns. In theory, Sentry can slice through almost any Marvel hero and villain, with the exception of enтιтies like Knull, Eternity, and the Living Tribunal. Sentry has killed Carnage and Ares effortlessly, and he destroyed Asgard without breaking a sweat. In the source material, Sentry is usually stopped by tapping into the depths of his unconscious or by affecting his Void alter ego.
The Avengers Powers And Team Iterations Explained
The MCU’s Avengers Have Become Increasingly Powerful
In the MCU, the Avengers start out as a volatile team of heroes powerful enough to fight off the Chitauri and overturn Loki’s attempt to invade Earth. Soon enough, the Avengers manage to defeat Ultron and his countless bots, but they’re unable to fend off Thanos. The Avengers’ shared power level has been variable throughout the MCU, as characters like Hulk, Thor, Captain Marvel, and Scarlet Witch have left the team more than once. With the latter two as active members and a solid strategy, the Avengers might be able to defeat most of the universe’s biggest threats.
Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame show how important it is for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to retain a balanced line-up and keep several back-up plans in place. If it weren’t for their break-up in Captain America: Civil War, powerful heroes like Scarlet Witch could have responded early and stopped the Black Order in Avengers: Infinity War. Destiny aside, it’s the Avengers’ lack of communication that makes them vulnerable to Thanos. Otherwise, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could choose their best possible members for every battle and thus win every battle consistently.
Sentry Would Win In A Fight In The MCU
Thunderbolts* Suggests The Avengers Are No Match For Sentry
In Thunderbolts*, the тιтular team fail to land a single blow on Robert Reynolds once he awakens his Sentry powers. As Sentry, Bob doesn’t even blink as he neutralizes every attack. If Sentry so desired, he could obliterate the Thunderbolts with the flick of a finger. The only reason the Thunderbolts defeat Sentry is that Yelena understands the Void is linked to Bob’s emotions. If Yelena didn’t put the pieces together, the Void would take over the world. And if Bob could switch off the Void but still exploit his Sentry powers, he could destroy the world one city at a time.
In the comics, Knull kills Sentry the same way Sentry kills Ares: by ripping him in half. Knull made his live-action debut in Venom: The Last Dance.
The Avengers don’t have the context necessary to understand how to tame the Void, making them extremely vulnerable to its nightmare-inducing power. Even if they could exit or avoid the Void, the Avengers would have a very hard time fighting Sentry. Sentry could wipe out every hero under Thor’s power level, including Captain America, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. Considering Sentry doesn’t really want to fight in Thunderbolts*, his upper limit might be way higher than any other MCU character. Hence, a rage-fueled Sentry could also kill Thor, Captain America, and Hulk.
The Avengers’ last resort against Sentry would probably rely on Scarlet Witch’s reality-bending magic. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness proved that an out-of-control Wanda Maximoff, wielding the Darkhold’s forbidden knowledge, can alter her enemies’ bodies in any way she desires. Similarly to how Scarlet Witch turns Black Bolt and Mister Fantastic’s powers against them, she could change reality to kill Sentry with his own abilities. Curiously, though, Scarlet Witch and Sentry’s likelihood of winning depends on the same factor — how much they want to push their powers to the limit in order to kill each other.
