Steve’s Diamond Armor In A Minecraft Movie Explained: How Strong It Is & Video Game Comparison

One of the biggest reasons that A Minecraft Movie was so successful was its references to the video game, giving fans of the original plenty of things to look for during the movie’s runtime, from some of the unique and interesting Minecraft mobs that were shown off to the special items that Steve and the rest of the team used. These were all fun additions to the movie, showing off how much work went into making it feel like a true adaptation of Minecraft, and one of the most fun additions was Steve’s diamond armor.

Throughout the film, Jack Black’s Steve mostly wore his classic blue shirt and pants, which made sense as it has been his outfit for the entirety of Minecraft‘s existence, being one of A Minecraft Movie‘s more obvious Easter eggs. However, he did don an elytra at one point during the movie, and eventually, he wore a nearly full suit of diamond armor in time for A Minecraft Movie‘s ending, which did come a little bit out of nowhere, potentially causing some confusion for those less familiar with the video game.

How Steve Acquired The Diamond Armor In A Minecraft Movie

He Mined Diamonds And Crafted The Armor

While the movie never explicitly stated how Steve got the armor, there are plenty of ways to obtain it in the game, which would also likely be the way that Steve managed to get his hands on it. The most obvious answer would be that he just went into the mines and found it for himself, which tends to be the way that most people find it in the video game. Steve was shown to love mining in particular, and his redstone cave was full of diamonds in carts when he, Garrett, and Henry visited it.

Steve’s diamond carts were destroyed by the Great Hog when it attacked the redstone mine, so he would have needed to acquire more diamonds afterward, or he had another stash hidden away.

After finding the diamonds, Steve likely would’ve had a simple time crafting his armor, as he was also very adept at crafting unique and special items, and armor is simple enough to make in the Minecraft world. While there are places to find diamond armor naturally in the world, those places are usually extremely dangerous, like the Nether or End, and Steve didn’t seem to spend too much time in either of those dimensions, other than when he was imprisoned by Malgosha and the piglins.

How Strong Diamond Armor Is In Minecraft

Diamonds Are One Of The Strongest Materials In The Game

A Minecraft Movie

Diamonds are some of the most iconic items that have been in the video game since the beginning, which makes sense, as, for a long time, it was the strongest material in the game for making armor and tools. For older Minecraft versions, it was the rarest material in the game, and some people who only played those older versions may be surprised to learn that it has since been surpᴀssed by a different material called netherite, which is exclusive to Minecraft’s Nether dimension.

As diamonds are more iconic than netherite, and Steve didn’t spend much free time in the Nether, it made sense that he was given the diamond armor.

Diamond armor is still extremely strong in Minecraft, giving a total of 20 armor points, which is technically the same as netherite, though netherite armor has more durability, damage reduction, and has access to better enchantments. The previous tier of armor, iron, only gives 15 armor points, making diamond a pretty significant improvement when compared to the more minor increases that netherite gives. As diamonds are more iconic than netherite, and Steve didn’t spend much free time in the Nether, it made sense that he was given the diamond armor.

What Happens To Steve’s Diamond Armor In A Minecraft Movie

His Armor Didn’t Make It Through The Rest Of The Movie

Steve only wore his armor for a short scene near the end of the movie, and at that point, the movie shows the ultimate fate of his gear during his final fight, and it gets pretty significantly broken by Malgosha. He went into the fight with a helmet, chestplate, and boots, not wearing any sort of leggings, presumably because they would restrict Jack Black’s movement too much. To begin the fight, Steve attempted to go for a sneak attack, ultimately leading to him lying in front of Minecraft‘s villain, Malgosha, as she tried to kill him with her staff.

Her first attack completely shattered his chestplate, which was a very unfortunate move as it is the most expensive and protective piece of armor in the game, though the movie didn’t really follow that same sort of logic. However, his helmet and boots remained intact for the rest of the finale, allowing him to save at least some of his diamonds by the movie’s end. However, clearly the armor didn’t matter too much afterward, as Steve left the Overworld at the end of A Minecraft Movie, leaving all of his materials there, including the remnants of his diamond armor.
