Mad Max Prequel’s 2024 Box Office Led To $120M Loss For Warner Bros.

A new report has revealed that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga led to a $120 million loss for Warner Bros. The movie is a prequel to the Oscar-nominated hit Mad Max: Fury Road. The film follows the story of Furiosa as she goes from a kidnapped child to a strong adult ready to fight corrupted wasteland leaders. In place of Charlize Theron, Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne played the lead, with a supporting cast that included Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, and George Shevtsov.

Per a new report from ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Furiosa is reported to have lost Warner Bros. nearly $120 million. This is based on the sum of the movie’s total revenue and total costs. In addition to its theatrical haul, Furiosa is reported to have made $50 million via home entertainment and $85 million on television and streaming. Unfortunately, this could not offset its production costs, which, with prints, ads, and distribution, came out to $330.6 million, ultimately leading to the movie’s $119.6 million loss.

What This Means For Furiosa

The Film Vastly Underperformed Fury Road

Given the success of Mad Fax: Fury Road, director George Miller and the Warner Bros. team were hoping for another blockbuster with Furiosa. Ultimately, it underperformed Fury Road in several ways. Furiosa‘s reviews were lesser than those of its predecessor, getting a 90% in comparison to Fury Road‘s 97%. The movie also was not nominated for any Oscars, which was a big contrast to Mad Max: Fury Road, which won 6 Oscars and was nominated for others, including Best Picture.

ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender gave Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 8 out of 10 stars, praising the lead performances.

The recent report reveals just how much Furiosa underperformed the previous franchise film at the box office. Though the exact metrics are new, it has been known for a while that Furiosa almost certainly lost Warner Bros. millions. Before ad costs, the budget was estimated at $168 million, a number that ᴅᴇᴀᴅline confirms in the new report. It went on to make only $174 million at the worldwide box office, which was not nearly enough to meet the total of $330.6 million cost, even with streaming revenue.

Our Take On The Furiosa Losses

Warner Bros. Miscalculated

A War Boy about to sacrifice himself in Mad Max: Fury Road

This report means that Warner Bros. made an understandable but costly mistake when it came to making Furiosa. With Fury Road having brought in $380.4 million on an estimated $150 million budget, the studio was undoubtedly hoping to see a similar box office story. Unfortunately, Furiosa‘s performance showed that Fury Road may have succeeded based on its merits or the excitement surrounding the Mad Max franchise return, a magic that the studio was not able to repeat.
