Babygirl Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play

Babygirl‘s soundtrack is chock-full of songs that include classics, tracks by up-and-coming artists, and music that underscores the themes of the A24 movie. The erotic drama, which was written and directed by Bodies Bodies Bodies‘ Halina Reijn, stars Oscar winner Nicole Kidman as Romy Mathis, a robotics CEO who begins a torrid affair with her young intern Samuel (Triangle of Sadness star Harris Dickinson) that allows her to explore her pent-up desires. The ensemble cast of the movie also includes Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas, Talk to Me star Sophie Wilde, American idol contestant Anoop Desai, and Inside Man‘s Dolly Wells.

It was a success, grossing $64.5 million worldwide against its $20 million budget. While it was not nominated for any Academy Awards, it did earn a Certified Fresh 76% Rotten Tomatoes score and went on to both be nominated for a Golden Globe and win a National Board of Review Award, in spite of the fact that its subject matter spurred some controversy. The Babygirl age gap romance, which was the story’s most divisive element, is underscored by a number of pre-recorded “needle drop” songs that accentuate both the sensuality of the situation and the overall themes of the movie.

When Every Song On The Babygirl Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

The Songs Frequently Comment Upon The Story

“It’s Christmas” by Carl Coccomo: The first song on the soundtrack comes after the core Babygirl cast has already been introduced, about 15 minutes into the movie. The classic Carl Coccomo holiday tune plays quietly in the background at Romy’s company’s holiday party, underscoring the fact that the movie takes place during the Christmas season. Emphasizing this is crucial to the narrative, because the original screenplay took place over the summer and the story was later transposed to a different time of year when the movie was delayed amid the 2023 strikes.

“Dancing On My Own” by Robyn: This melancholy dance track from Swedish artist Robyn plays at the holiday party after Romy has an exhange with Samuel on the balcony that thrums with Sєxual tension. Although Romy begins the scene dancing with her family, she eventually separates herself from them and jealously watches Samuel dancing with another intern across the room, making the lyrics “I’m in the corner watching you kiss her” feel even more evocative given how they mirror her situation.

“Requiem in D Minor, K. 626 ‘Missa pro defunctis’: III. Sequentia” by Wolfang Amadeus Mozart, Performed by Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin: This intense classical piece plays during the transition between two major scenes, kicking off when Samuel says goodbye to Romy after making her drink a glᴀss of milk at a bar and carrying over into a sequence of her fantasizing about him, followed by her making her way backstage after her husband’s play.

“Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS: This song plays after Romy’s first tryst with Samuel in a H๏τel room, also underscoring a montage of the pair carrying on their affair in a variety of locations. The use of the 1987 classic underscores the generational gap between the characters, as the song debuted before Samuel was even born. At the end of the montage, Romy is shown dancing along to the song in her own home, emphasizing the fact that the song is connected with her experience of the affair, rather than Samuel’s.

Using “Never Tear Us Apart” in Babygirl was so important to Halina Reijn that Nicole Kidman personally arranged for its use in the movie when she learned that there were issues with licensing the track.

“Father Figure” by George Michael: Samuel does a sensual dance to this 1987 solo single from former Wham! member George Michael in the H๏τel room with Romy. In addition to carrying on the soundtrack’s 1980s sensibility, the use of “Father Figure” further underscores the age gap between the main characters by ironically juxtaposing the lyrics with Samuel’s age to emphasize how he nevertheless has power over Romy.

“Sleeper” by BADBADNOTGOOD & Charlotte Day Wilson: This slinky song plays in the background at Romy’s daughter’s birthday party, subtly foreshadowing the fact that Samuel will soon arrive, unbeknownst to her.

“Deceptacon” by Le Tigre: This lively track is the second needle drop to play during Romy’s daughter’s birthday party. It plays after Samuel arrives, during a scene where Romy once again stares at him from across a dance floor, highlighting how much their relationship has changed since the office’s holiday party.

“CRUSH” by Yellow Claw & Natte Visstick & RHYME: This song plays while Romy and Samuel dance at the club. The propulsive drum beat seems to reflect the powerful pull that Romy feels toward Samuel, even though she knows continuing her affair goes against her better judgment.

“Creep” by Yellow Claw & Police In Paris & Stoltenhoff: This electronic dance track also plays during the dance sequence at the club, carrying over the feeling of the other needle drop by Yellow Claw. The lyrics include the line “I’m a dirty little freak,” which speaks directly to how Romy feels about herself while exploring her desires outside of her marriage.

“LSD” by Yellow Claw feat. Syaqish: This is the third song that plays during the club sequence. The continued use of Yellow Claw music allows the scene to progress forward in time, showcasing different songs that the couple dances to throughout the night while maintaining a consistent tone.

“Leash” by Sky Ferreira: This dark and sensual song, which was co-written by Ferreira (a singer-songwriter and actor who was featured in both capacities in 2017’s Baby Driver) with Jorge Elbrecht, has lyrics that evoke Babygirl ‘s dog motif, which is spread throughout the movie as Romy explores the limits of power and control. The song, which was written for the movie, plays over the closing credits. While the track was on the longlist for an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, it did not ultimately get nominated in the category.

There are several other songs listed in the end credits of Babygirl that are not featured prominently. This includes the electronic instrumental track “Carres” by Crowander and the Dutch hip-hop song “De Toneelacademie” by De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig. Additionally, the song “12 Clock” by The Skyler Hagner Big Band is credited, though it does not seem to have been released on any platform, so it is unclear when it plays in the movie. However, it is most likely the jazzy tune that underscores Romy’s entrance to the bar where Samuel orders her a glᴀss of milk.
