Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s Backstory And OXE Are Still Mysterious Even After Thunderbolts*

Spoiler alert! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.

Thunderbolts* finally brought together several of Marvel’s most morally complex characters, but instead of giving answers about long-standing questions, it deepened the mystery surrounding one of the MCU’s most enigmatic figures: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Valentina has been lurking in the MCU’s shadows for years, ᴀssembling a new team of superpowered operatives and seemingly pulling strings behind the scenes. But even with her expanded role in the MCU’s Thunderbolts, both her personal history and her organization, OXE, remain shrouded in secrecy.

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was first introduced in the MCU timeline in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), where she approached John Walker after his fall from grace, offering him a second chance as the U.S. Agent. She returned in Black Widow (2021) during the film’s post-credits scene, recruiting Yelena Belova and giving her a new mission: target Hawkeye. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Valentina was revealed as the new director of the CIA. However, none of these appearances explained her motivations, origins, or affiliations – until Thunderbolts, which only scratched the surface.

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s Childhood Flashback Scene Explained

One of the most intriguing moments in Thunderbolts* comes when Valentina touches the Sentry (Bob Reynolds) for the first time. Due to the mysterious nature of Bob’s unstable mind and immense power, physical contact with him often results in vivid psychic projections. Characters exposed to Bob’s energy often relive memories, and for Valentina, that moment unlocks a repressed fragment from her past.

In the vision, young Valentina is seen hiding in a dilapidated house, speaking fluent Italian – strongly suggesting she didn’t grow up in the United States, contradicting ᴀssumptions that she’s a purely American intelligence figure. She tearfully apologizes to her father, admitting that she told someone their location. Her father, calm but clearly afraid, tells her to hide. Moments later, a man arrives at the door and speaks cryptically about Valentina’s father expecting this result. He then shoots Valentina’s father, presumably killing him.

No further exposition is provided in the film, leaving the moment deliberately ambiguous. However, this scene adds emotional weight to Valentina’s otherwise cold and strategic demeanor. It subtly links her past trauma to her present obsession with control, security, and secrecy.

In the comics, Valentina’s parents were resistance fighters who were murdered for standing against authoritarian forces. The MCU may be leaning into this angle, suggesting that Valentina’s recruitment into intelligence and her deep mistrust of authority were forged in childhood. Still, without more answers, her full backstory remains one of the MCU’s biggest question marks.

What Is OXE And How It Connects To Marvel Comics Explained

Thunderbolts* also marks the official debut of OXE in the MCU. While the organization had been hinted at in previous media tie-ins and promotional materials, the film confirms its existence and purpose: OXE is Valentina’s private black-ops science division, focused on creating superhumans. It is revealed that she used OXE to experiment on troubled individuals using a derivative of the super soldier serum – leading directly to the creation of the Sentry.

In the comics, OXE was first introduced in relation to the Outer Circle, a clandestine group manipulating world events behind the scenes. OXE acted as one of the Outer Circle’s scientific arms, dedicated to acquiring and weaponizing secrets. After the dissolution of the Outer Circle, Bucky Barnes – having infiltrated the group – took control of its remnants and proposed using OXE for more noble purposes, including launching a new Thunderbolts team under his leadership.

The MCU’s version of OXE appears to merge these elements with Valentina’s shady recruitment practices. Rather than being a repurposed remnant of a fallen secret society, OXE here is born out of Valentina’s vision: an organization free of oversight, capable of creating powerful beings to serve what she deems the greater good. It’s government-adjacent but ultimately loyal to Valentina herself.

What’s Next For Valentina And OXE In The MCU

Thunderbolts* ends with major questions still unanswered. Despite the chaos, Valentina is very much alive, and her position within the government seems intact. This is largely thanks to her frantic attempts to disguise her actions by announcing a new Avengers team.

It’s implied that OXE’s operations may continue, though perhaps with a tie to the new superhero team. Just as SHIELD once served as the backbone of the Avengers initiative, OXE appears to be building the infrastructure for a new generation of heroes. Valentina, in this light, becomes the MCU’s dark mirror to Nick Fury. While Fury believed in ᴀssembling heroes to protect the world, Valentina is creating tools to control it.

Her version of the Avengers may not be driven by altruism, but rather pragmatism and a desire to never be caught off guard again. Whether OXE becomes a larger fixture in future MCU phases is unclear, but its introduction in Thunderbolts* certainly suggests so. Meanwhile. Valentina, still operating from the shadows, remains one of the most compelling wild cards Marvel has to offer.
