In a recent interview (via Screen Rant), The Boys star Jack Quaid opened up about his character’s evolution and future in the series. After recalling how the show changed his life and discussing how satisfying it was to play Hughie, Quaid highlighted how much Hughie has changed since season 1. “In the first season, he’s like a baby,” said Jack Quaid, before recounting how Hughie became “a kid learning about everything” in season 2 and a rebellious teenager in season 3.
Based on Jack Quaid’s description, Hughie will finally touch manhood in season 5, which significantly reduces the odds of his death because it would make little narrative sense for the series to kill him off right after his catharsis.
Explaining his character’s transformation with each The Boys season, Quaid further added how he ended up “really maturing and growing” in season 4 after experiencing the pain of losing his father. Hughie’s Story Has A Largely Positive Ending In The Original Comics
Even in the original The Boys comics, the final arc features extreme mayhem and bloodshed, followed by the deaths of many main characters. Billy Butcher, too, meets a tragic fate before he can execute his genocidal plans of eradicating all supes from the face of the planet. Hughie, on the other hand, not only saves the day by stopping Butcher but also ends up surviving all the chaos that ensues in the closing storyline. His narrative ends with him taking Butcher’s role, where he ensures that Vought never rises to power again.
Like his show counterpart, Hughie finally becomes a man when he takes it upon himself to hold the supes and Vought accountable. The comics also have an epilogue, тιтled Dear Becky, in which supes and Vought fade out of relevance while Hughie lives a simple life with Annie in Scotland. The story concludes with Hughie swearing to never think about Butcher again and gathering the courage to marry Annie. While only time will tell whether The Boys season 5 will feature the epilogue story, it seems like Hughie’s final arc will be similar to his comic counterpart’s.
