Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Age Rating Continues 32-Year Franchise Trend

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

‘s age rating has now been revealed, and it continues a longstanding franchise tradition. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the upcoming soft reboot takes place five years after the events of Jurᴀssic World Dominion (2022), following Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett as she leads an expedition into dino-infested territory to recover DNA for a medical breakthrough. In addition to showing off the movie’s supporting cast, which includes Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and Mahershala Ali, the Jurᴀssic World Rebirth trailers have teased a return to the franchise’s roots in terms of tone and action.

Now, FilmRatings.com reveals that Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will be keeping one 32-year franchise tradition alive, with the MPA having given the film a PG-13 rating. The film earned the rating for “intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language and a drug reference,” which actually differs somewhat from previous installments. What This Means For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

The Scarlett Johansson Movie May Push Franchise Boundaries

Steven Spielberg’s original Jurᴀssic Park is widely considered one of the best and most important summer blockbusters ever made. The PG-13 rating was a sweet spot for the film – and for big-budget studio blockbusters in general – because it allows for more intense action while still appealing to all the key demographics. An R-rating, for example, would be hard to justify for a Jurᴀssic Park movie given how much it would limit the potential audience relative to how much these movies cost to make.

While an R rating or a PG were almost definitely never on the table for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, the justification for the PG-13 could suggest the movie will push the envelope more than past installments. This is the first installment in the franchise, after all, to have the inclusion of “bloody images in the MPA justification, and the same can be said for the suggestive material and drug reference. After the lackluster Jurᴀssic World Dominion reviews, Edwards could be trying to inject some life back into the franchise with a fresh – and more violent – take.

Our Take On Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Age Rating

PG-13 Is Perfect For The Franchise

While it would be interesting to one day see an R-rated Jurᴀssic movie, the PG-13 rating has served the franchise well. Even though reviews for the various films have had their ups and downs, the amount of bloody violence and swearing has never really been a factor that has affected the movies’ quality. In Jurᴀssic World Dominion, for example, the film suffered critically because it failed to balance its large cast and struggled in terms of exploring its own premise of humans living side-by-side with dinosaurs.

Jurᴀssic World Dominion is currently the lowest-rated entry in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ score of only 29%.

With original movie screenwriter David Koepp having written the script and Edwards in the director’s chair, there’s certainly reason to believe Rebirth will succeed with its PG-13 rating. This rating will hopefully mean that the film strikes that key franchise balance, which is to maintain a sense of fun alongside the dino terror. Many questions remain about Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, but a wide audience will evidently be able to check the movie out in theaters this summer.
