DC Studios Scraps Major Movie – Story Details, Casting & Cancellation Explained

A new report claims that Sgt. Rock has been scrapped by DC. While projects like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Lanterns are on the horizon, not all movies and series announced by DC, or reported to be happening, will make it from the page to the screen. For instance, James Gunn’s DCU Chapter One plans include a movie for The Authority, but the DC Studios creative head has since revealed that the project is on the back burner. A similar event has now happened again, but with the studio reportedly scrapping the project altogether.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios is not moving forward with director Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock. The movie would have starred The Batman‘s Colin Farrell and Challengers‘ Mike Faist. According to the report, Sgt. Rock‘s story focused on Rock and a female French Resistance fighter searching for the Spear of Destiny, which was used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion and is rumored to have supernatural properties. The heroes would race the Nazis for it.

The DC film’s budget was said to be in the $70 million range…

The DC movie was reportedly scrapped due to scheduling issues related to shooting outdoors. There is a possibility Sgt. Rock could end up being brought back for a summer 2026 shoot, which will depend on a new ᴀssessment by DC at the end of the year. The DC film’s budget was said to be in the $70 million range, and an insider believes that Guadagnino’s lack of experience with action movies could have played a role in the DC movie’s fate.

What DC’s Sgt. Rock Cancellation Means

Not All DC Projects In Development Will Be Made

James Gunn has previously explained that the future of the DCU depends on how well his Superman movie performs. If David Corenswet’s debut as the Man of Steel is a success, then the franchise will be able to continue as planned. That shows how much pressure is on the studio to get every project just right as the new DC leadership starts to release the first movies and TV shows that it is developing. Sgt. Rock would have been the most different addition to the lineup of announced DC projects.

With Luca Guadagnino as its director and focused on a World War II soldier with no powers, Sgt. Rock was not the typical project to go alongside the likes of Gunn’s Superman or Lanterns. That is why executives might have had cold feet, which the report suggested could be behind the movie’s cancellation besides scheduling conflicts. Given how THR mentions that DC will reᴀssess the movie’s status at the end of the year, it might also be due to the studio waiting to see how Superman performs and whether such a unique DC concept like Sgt. Rock can work.

Our Take On DC’s Sgt. Rock Cancellation

There Is Still Hope For The World War II Hero

Sgt Rock Shooting at Zombies Featured

I’m disappointed by Sgt. Rock‘s cancellation. Prior to it being announced, I would never have thought that a Sgt. Rock movie was needed. However, all the talented actors attached to the project, with Guadagnino helming a DC movie after a series of awards-worthy films, made me very excited about the surprising DC project. Since there is still the possibility that the movie could be back after DC ᴀssesses its status at the end of the year, I hope a different decision is made and Sgt. Rock is brought back, opening the door for a new side of DC.

DC Universe

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
