George Lucas Finally Reveals Why Yoda Speaks So Strangely

George Lucas reveals why Star Wars‘ Yoda speaks differently. First introduced in the 1980 blockbuster Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda, voiced and puppeted by Frank Oz, is an important figure in the original, prequel, and sequel trilogies as the one who trained Luke Skywalker and the Jedi before him. Known for popular quotes such as “Always in motion, is the future,” the way Yoda talks is central to what makes him memorable.

Per Variety, the filmmaker addressed Yoda’s distinct dialect at the 45th anniversary screening of The Empire Strikes Back during the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival. Lucas shared that Yoda’s use of a backward pattern in his speech was due to his role of being the “philosopher of the movie,” and that it would be difficult to get people, especially younger audiences, to listen if he spoke regular English. Check out Lucas’ comments below:

Because if you speak regular English, people won’t listen that much. But if he had an accent, or it’s really hard to understand what he’s saying, they focus on what he’s saying. He was basically the philosopher of the movie. I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen — especially 12-year-olds.

George Lucas’ Explanation Makes Perfect Sense

Yoda Represents Long-Lost Wisdom

Yoda speaks words of wisdom in Star Wars. Oz has previously revealed that he was told to look at Albert Einstein as an inspiration for the character. While details about Yoda’s species and his backstory still remain largely unknown, Oz claimed that Yoda, being one of the last real Jedi, spoke the way they originally spoke. Lucas’ recent comments align with what Oz has previously shared, which means Yoda’s dialect might not have a real-world inspiration after all.

Linguists have broken down Yoda’s object-subject-verb word order and linked it to languages like Hawaiian and Celtic languages, but Yoda’s speech pattern is quite rare. Lucas has also achieved his goal of making others listen by combining the way the character speaks with insightful words, resulting in Yoda’s powerful quotes, including “Do or do not. There is no try,” “The greatest teacher, failure is,” and “Named must be your fear before banish it you can.”

Other Members Of Yoda’s Species Speak “Basic” Normally

Yoda Is A Unique Existence In The Star Wars Universe

Interestingly, Yoda’s backward pattern is a Yoda thing, proven by Yaddle, who was introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. As another member of the Jedi Council, Yaddle is a female member of Yoda’s species. However, unlike Yoda, she speaks with normal Galactic Basic syntax.

It makes sense because when Yaddle appears in Tales of the Jedi, she is presented as a more approachable character in addition to her wisdom and critical role in the Jedi Council. Her existence also didn’t replace Yoda’s role in the franchise. As Lucas explained, Yoda is the philosopher of the movie, which makes him irreplaceable in the Star Wars universe.
