John Wick 5 had to happen, when there are still at least a couple of notable actors it would be thrilling to see join the landmark action franchise. John Wick: Chapter 5 was reaffirmed to be in development at CinemaCon 2025, along with several other upcoming John Wick projects. Theories about how Keanu Reeves could return as the iconic hitman have been abounding for ages, since the character’s apparent death in John Wick: Chapter 4. While the next sequel is still somewhat mysterious, it is certain to be another stylish action thriller hinging on Wick’s understated, terrifying presence.
However, John Wick 5 does have the potential to move into fresh territory for its тιтle character when his revenge missions have seemingly run out. Yet again, the new movie could benefit from some A-list stars playing the suave but over-the-top people who inhabit this striking depiction of a criminal underworld. John Wick 4, widely considered to be the best John Wick movie, certainly benefited from the one-off performances by stars such as Donnie Yen and Bill Skarsgård. Now, John Wick 5 should jump at the chance for some more metatextuality with its casting.
John Wick Can’t End Before Carrie-Anne Moss & Hugo Weaving Join The Franchise
The Other Two Biggest Matrix Stars Need To Make Their Mark On John Wick
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving are decidedly the leading quartet of the Matrix franchise. Reeves redefined his career yet again when he managed to find a character who would amᴀss the cultural status to rival Neo, while Fishburne’s inclusion in John Wick‘s last two movies consтιтuted a great Matrix reunion. The Bowrey King has his own power and presence in this world and can aid Wick in surprising ways, hinting at the past Neo-Morpheus dynamic but still pushing these actors to do something new when the characters are primarily loyal to themselves.
Reeves and Weaving have always had amazing on-screen chemistry, practically demanding that we get to see them fighting on the same side for once.
This shows how Moss and Weaving would also be perfect in John Wick, likely serving as segues into showing more of this criminal society while playing on audience expectations about their interactions with Reeves. The movies can introduce an additional Continental location at any time with a charismatic new character as the manager or concierge, which seems like the perfect space for Moss to play a formidable ᴀssᴀssin, who clashes with Wick. On the other hand, Reeves and Weaving have always had amazing on-screen chemistry, practically demanding that we get to see them fighting on the same side for once.
John Wick Can Pull Off Another Matrix Reunion Without Coming Off As Silly
John Wick’s Setting Is A Bit Ridiculous, But The Characters Always Make It Riveting
John Wick can pull off a couple more Matrix reunions because the series has always been self-aware of its own unlikelihood, blanketing it with just enough fictionality for us to buy into it for the sake of all it does have to offer. John actually quotes Neo when he says he will be needing “lots of guns.” The cast of John Wick goes about their activities with complete professionalism, everything being presented through the code-speak of luxury H๏τels and polite business arrangements. It is darkly funny but also fascinating. Erstwhile, The Matrix has also thrived off completely sincere dramatics.
Moss and Weaving could easily join John Wick 5 because the smallest amount of meta-humor about it being Trinity and Agent Smith would be right at home in this narrative. Additionally, they are both just the perfect actors to bring to life the slick yet ᴅᴇᴀᴅly characters who populate this franchise. When Reeves may be working with either of them again for The Matrix 5, John Wick could possibly boost itself by trying to beat The Matrix at its own game.
