Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has left a mᴀssive impression on audiences since its release in theaters. Although it is a violent horror movie featuring bloodthirsty vampires, Sinners, with its deeper meanings, is also a musical blockbuster that celebrates several cultures, particularly Black culture, through sound, making it a feast for the senses. Probably the most memorable scene from Sinners is Sammie’s musical performance at Smoke and Stack’s juke joint.
With his gift for creating “true” music, Sammie pierces the veil of time and conjures spirits from the past and future who perform their own styles of song and dance with him in a mind-boggling one-sH๏τ scene. Sammie’s music attracts Sinners’ villainous vampire Remmick and kicks off the heroes’ war with the vampires. However, this scene also makes for a supernatural celebration of music across cultures and generations, as ghosts from various eras and different races join Sammie in his performance.

Sammie Begins Playing With His Signature Style Of Music In Sinners
Sammie begins his magical concert at the juke joint with his traditional brand of the blues. In his debut performance, Sammie sings “I Lied to You” with the new guitar Smoke and Stack gave him, literally tearing the roof off the joint with his music. Reflecting Sammie’s roots in Mississippi, this blues song is the purest expression of who he is as a person and a musician. As he performs this tune and sings its lyrics, Sammie finally breaks free from his conservative father and fully expresses himself to his adoring peers through his music, making this the best night of his life, at least before the vampires show up.

Another Guitarist Joins Sammie Onstage In Sinners
Sammie’s mystical power began to manifest during his concert at the juke joint with the appearance of a man playing the electric guitar. This shows how Sammie is able to conjure spirits throughout history with his music, opening the doors to the future and beginning a mesmerizing and psychedelic fusion of genres during his big show.
The way this guitarist, reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, comes out of time and on the stage with Sammie also encapsulates how rock ‘n’ roll is rooted in Black culture, giving audiences an outstanding lesson about the history of music. Since the blues particularly inspired rock ‘n’ roll, it’s only natural that Sammie’s blues music led to the former’s appearance in this scene.

Sinners Integrates Even More Modern Music Into Sammie’s Performance
As Sammie’s music explores the future of music, Sinners‘ one-sH๏τ scene incorporates various elements of hip hop, another popular genre of music that originated in Black culture. The film continues to modernize the juke joint by showing people in sweatsuits breakdancing with everyone while weaving rapped vocals into the music. The film also throws trap and G-Funk into the mix, highlighting the different forms of music that were born from hip hop. Sammie’s song even conjures a DJ working a turntable on the stage, turning the juke joint into a nightclub that transcends time and space for music lovers across generations.

Sammie Brings The Music Of His Ancestors To The Juke Joint
After invoking spirits from the future, Sammie brings forth spirits of the past in the form of tribal Africans, who perform while wearing traditional garb and masks. These artists from Sammie’s ancestral continent join the festivities with their own form of dancing. The West African spirits also accompany Sammie’s guitar with the sound of their tribal drums. By presenting these tribal artists alongside rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop performers, Sinners continues to show how much Black music has evolved across centuries while still retaining threads that stretch back centuries.

The Choir Adds A Heavenly Layer To Sammie’s Music
Though blues is the core style of music unleashed by Sammie, the film adds another style of sound from his own time through the gospel choir that can be heard singing in the background. Sammie is the son of a preacher and has been raised performing religious music for his church. For this reason, the way the film incorporates gospel into Sammie’s blues performance shows that religion remains a part of him, despite his rebellion against his father. It also emphasizes the supernatural power of Sammie’s music as it pierces through time and space, attracting ghosts and demons alike to the juke joint.

Sammie Also Summons Musical Spirits Related To Grace And Bo

While Sammie’s concert is primarily a celebration of Black culture, his music doesn’t just summon Black spirits in Sinners. It also summons the spirits of Chinese “xiqu” performers, reflecting the cultural heritage of Grace and Bo Chow, who were both dancing with everyone at the juke joint. Also known as “Chinese opera,” this form of musical theater has existed in Chinese culture for thousands of years, mixing singing and dancing with martial arts to present a stunning and acrobatic style of art. The use of xiqu in Sammie’s concert adds another level of beauty to the scene, as well as another layer of cultural diversity in Sinners.
