A Minecraft Movie has surged past yet another worldwide box office milestone. The hit movie, which is inspired by the popular video game that gives it its тιтle, stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. The Minecraft Movie release started off with a bang, earning the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a video game movie before surging past a number of huge milestones. During its third frame, over Easter weekend, it surged past $700 million thanks to huge grosses both in domestic theaters and international markets.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, A Minecraft Movie is projected to earn a cumulative global box office total of $816 million by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters. This will see it easily clearing the $800 million milestone, maintaining its place as the second highest-grossing movie of the year behind the Chinese smash hit Ne Zha 2 ($1.898 billion). It is only the 19th movie to pᴀss this milestone in the 2020s, joining an elite group that includes Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955.8 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($845.5 million).
What This Means For A Minecraft Movie
Can It Make $1 Billion?
While it is continuing to turn out astonishing grosses, it is undeniable that the Minecraft Movie box office is slowing down. After it surpᴀssed the $300 million milestone during its opening weekend and surging past $500 million during its sophomore frame, this new milestone, while still impressive, shows the natural diminishing returns that the movie is experiencing as it approaches having been in theaters for a full month. While it will continue to climb, it still remains to be seen if it can hit the coveted $1 billion mark.
Only 59 movies in history have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
While it seems highly likely that A Minecraft Movie can earn the $184 million necessary to pᴀss that huge milestone, it will be facing off against major upcoming blockbusters that will most likely see it crowded out of theaters over the course of the next month, diminishing its ability to leap past huge milestones. These movies include Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, out May 2, and the simultaneous May 23 debut of the live-action Lilo & Sтιтch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This could mean that it will take quite a few more weekends for it to hit $1 billion.
Our Take On The Minecraft Movie Box Office Milestone
It Is Already A Solid Success
At the rate it is going, the 2025 release seems unlikely to topple 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion) as the highest-grossing video game movie of all time. However, it is still a major success. Movies typically need to earn back two-and-a-half times their budgets in order to break even. As the budget of A Minecraft Movie is reportedly $150 million, it has already more than quintupled its price tag, cementing it as a smash hit even if it doesn’t earn $1 billion or become the No. 1 video game movie.
