Forget Return Of The Jedi, Boba Fett Has Actually “Died” 5 Times In Star Wars

Every Star Wars fan knows what happened to Boba Fett in Return of the Jedi, but the franchise has given him multiple deaths over the past 40 years. Following the Star Wars original trilogy, most viewers presumed Boba ᴅᴇᴀᴅ until the Star Wars Legends Expanded Universe found ways to bring him back. Subsequent stories found other creative ways to kill Boba without making it permanent.

When the official Star Wars canon was reset in 2014, Boba was once again presumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, with the books implying he would not return. However, Temuera Morrison reprised the role in The Mandalorian season 2, and Boba later got his own spinoff called The Book of Boba Fett. Thanks to multiple stories across each Star Wars timeline, Boba has now “died” five times throughout the franchise’s history.

Boba Fett Fell Into The Sarlacc Pit In Return Of The Jedi

His first “death” that didn’t last very long

Boba Fett’s most well-known “death” was in Return of the Jedi when he fell into the sarlacc pit. Of course, this fate didn’t last long, as the books and comics revealed that Boba’s Mandalorian armor protected him until he could escape. Boba lived for at least another 40 years in Legends, continuing his work as a bounty hunter and eventually becoming the new leader of the Mandalorian Protectors.

However, Boba’s life took a different turn in canon when he escaped from the sarlacc pit. He joined a tribe of Tusken raiders for a time, but when they were all slaughtered, Boba reclaimed his armor and became Tatooine’s new crime boss. Boba’s life after defeating the Pyke Syndicate is currently unknown, but maybe Star Wars canon will eventually kill him off for real.

Boba Fett Fell Into The Sarlacc Pit A Second Time In Legends

A cruel twist of fate for Boba Fett

Boba’s first escape was in Star Wars (1977) #81, released only a few months after Return of the Jedi. His time in the pit left him without memories, so he was mistaken for a droid and taken onboard a Jawa Sandcrawler. Han Solo later showed up on his own mission and tried to save Boba before the Sandcrawler crashed into the sarlacc pit, but Boba remembered Han and tried to kill him, sealing his fate a second time.

Of course, this death didn’t last either, as Boba made another escape using his jetpack. He was severely injured and close to death, but was found and saved by fellow bounty hunter Dengar. The galaxy thought Boba was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, something he used to his advantage on ᴀssignments, but Han learned six years later that Boba had survived in Star Wars: Dark Empire by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy.

Boba Fett appears ᴅᴇᴀᴅ on the cover of Star Wars: Blood Ties - Boba Fett Is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ #1.

The aptly-named comic miniseries Star Wars: Blood Ties – Boba Fett is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ made it appear that the bounty hunter had died years before he fell into the sarlacc. When he was attacked by a large group of stormtroopers and mercenaries, Boba faked his death by putting his armor on the body of the man he’d been hunting. He then tracked down and killed those responsible for trying to kill him, returning to his life as a bounty hunter.

There have been a few Star Wars stories where Boba really did die, but they were never designed to be canon. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed‘s Tatooine DLC picks up where the game’s dark side ending leaves off, with Starkiller tracking R2-D2 and C-3PO in an alternate version of A New Hope. Starkiller goes to Jabba’s Palace for information but is confronted by Boba, whom he brutally kills in the ensuing fight.

Boba Suffered Multiple Tragic Fates In Star Wars’ “What If” Series

One of these fates is poetic justice

The Star Wars Infinities comic series explores “What If” stories for each film in the original trilogy, meaning Boba dies more than once. In Star Wars Infinities: The Empire Strikes Back, Boba is captured at Cloud City, frozen in carbonite, and used as Lando Calrissian’s new desk. When Darth Vader arrives and Boba is nowhere to be found, he orders Cloud City’s destruction, presumably killing Boba.

In Star Wars Infinities: Return of the Jedi, Boba escapes from Jabba’s Palace with the frozen Han Solo after Leia’s rescue goes wrong. The rebels track Boba down while he attempts to sell Han to the Empire, and he is killed in the ensuing fight. These may be non-canon “What If” stories, but they’re the only time Star Wars has really killed Boba Fett, but it’s always possible that a future canon story will give him a final send-off.
