The Accountant 3: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

The Accountant 2 upped the ante and turned the surprise action hit into a bona fide franchise, but will the series continue in The Accountant 3? Starting in 2016 with the release of the first film, the Accountant series concerns Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a man on the autism spectrum who uses his affinity for numbers as an accountant for criminal organizations. After cracking a multi-million-dollar conspiracy in the first film, The Accountant 2 found Christian teaming up with his estranged brother to help solve the murder of a high-ranking Treasury agent.

2016’s The Accountant wildly overperformed at the box office, and it seemed as if the sequel would arrive imminently. However, it would take the better part of a decade for The Accountant 2 to finally land on the big screen. Despite these delays, the story of Christian Wolff clearly has potential as an ongoing franchise, and talk of The Accountant 3 has already started up. While it’s not certain if the threequel will ever actually see the light of day, the character-driven action franchise has no reason to stop after only two installments.

Anna Kendrick’s Dana May Return In The Threequel

Though nothing about the potential third movie is set in stone yet, the latest news finds director Gavin O’Connor discussing Anna Kendrick’s return in The Accountant 3. The filmmaker behind the first two movies made it clear that Kendrick’s Dana was never meant to appear in the sequel, and that the focus was squarely put on the brothers for a reason. He then went on to tease some ideas for The Accountant 3, including Christian’s ongoing search for love, which could necessitate Dana’s return.

Read O’Connor’s comments below:

No, it was never—the second film was always for Bill [Dubuque] and I to start to unite the two brothers. Very slowly. They had to start to fix all their s–t, their issues. So, that was always the intention for the second movie. And the third movie, and I wanted to set up that Chris is still looking for love and looking for connection, which I’m going to explore deeper in the third movie. So, don’t be surprised if Dana, Anna [Kendrick] shows up in the third film.

The Accountant 3 Is Not Confirmed

Gavin O’Connor Has Plans, But The Movie Isn’t Confirmed

The Accountant 2 will need to be a smash-hit for a third film to score a green-light.

Director Gavin O’Connor has been the creative spearhead for the franchise since 2016, and he has already spoken candidly about his hopes for a third installment. However, The Accountant 3 is not confirmed yet, and likely won’t be made official until the first sequel’s box office results are known. Though ideas for a threequel are certainly exciting, enthusiasm alone is not enough to get a movie made in Hollywood. Instead, The Accountant 2 will need to be a smash-hit for a third film to score a green-light.

The Accountant 2 had its wide release on April 25, 2025.

When O’Connor appeared at SXSW in early 2025, he did mention that he didn’t plan for The Accountant 3 to take as long as the first sequel did, but it’s unclear how much of that was in his control. With Amazon acquiring the distribution rights for the franchise, it could be that The Accountant 3 could materialize much faster.

Will Christian & Braxton Return Again?

Though the first film and its sequel had high body counts, the heroes have largely come away unscathed and can return in future sequels. The most logical returns would be that of Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff and Jon Bernthal as his not-so-estranged brother, Braxton, since it is their relationship that carried the sequel. That brotherly bond is essential for a threequel, though other returns are certainly possible. Allison Robertson’s Justine is another crucial return, and she will be needed to help them on their future missions.

Cynthia Addai-Robinson has played the role of Treasury agent Marybeth Medina in both films thus far, so it’s possible she could team up with the Wolff brothers again. Meanwhile, Anna Kendrick’s Dana was conspicuously absent from the sequel, but director Gavin O’Connor hasn’t ruled out her return for The Accountant 3. As Christian continues to search for love and connection, he may be able to build a better bond with Dana now that he’s patched things up with his brother.

The Accountant 3 Story Details

Anything Can Happen In The Third Movie

The ending of The Accountant 2 doesn’t necessarily set up another film, but that isn’t unusual for the action genre. Instead, what the sequel did was expand the world in order to allow any number of new stories to spring forth in future sequels. With Christian and Brax now a world-beating tag-team of sorts, the brothers could be tasked with any number of dangerous missions that require Chris’ brains and Brax’s brash bravado.

Outside the action-centric elements of the story, Gavin O’Connor has teased that the threequel will focus more on Christian’s search for love and connection, something that’s been simmering throughout the franchise. With each installment, Christian grows as a character, and there’s a chance to pay that off in The Accountant 3. The return of Anna Kendrick’s Dana has been teased as well, meaning they could reignite their romance that was put to the side in The Accountant 2.
