This Indie Romantasy Series Is A Surprisingly Good Fourth Wing Replacement, And You Can Still Catch Up Before The Last Book

It’s difficult to find books that compare to Fourth Wing, but readers will no doubt be looking for some after finishing Onyx Storm — and one indie romantasy book makes a surprisingly great replacement. There are lots of underrated romantasy books that deserve more love, and many utilize tropes that readers will be searching for after Onyx Storm’s ending. Plenty of stories feature enemies-to-lovers romances, and there are lots of fantasy books about dragons and military academies. Unfortunately, all these elements don’t always go hand-in-hand.

While the obvious choice might be to pick up another popular BookTok hit, like Quicksilver or When the Moon Hatched, there are great independently published romantasy books that can fill the Onyx Storm-shaped hole in one’s heart. One such novel is gaining traction online ahead of its third and final sequel. For those looking for a genuine enemies-to-lovers relationship, dangerous magic academy, and dragons, it’s a must-read.

The Bloodwing Academy Series Is A Fourth Wing Replacement That Deserves More Attention

Despite Their Differences, It’s A Compelling Onyx Storm Follow-Up

Briar Boleyn’s Bloodwing Academy series isn’t exactly like Fourth Wing, but it has many elements that make it a solid follow-up to Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy series. It opens with a heavy focus on vampires, and its central romance takes the “enemies” part of enemies-to-lovers more seriously than Fourth Wing does. Book one, On Wings of Blood, also bears similarities to Zodiac Academy with its school setting, though fans of Basgiath’s trials in Fourth Wing will no doubt enjoy the backdrop as well.

Despite the two books’ differences, On Wings of Blood proves a surprisingly good Fourth Wing replacement.

Despite the two books’ differences, On Wings of Blood proves a surprisingly good Fourth Wing replacement, as its fast-paced storytelling, heavy romance focus, and strong-willed heroine will help readers get over their Onyx Storm book hangover. There’s also a dragon-riding storyline, though it doesn’t take off much until the end of the book. Even so, there’s a second book that will deliver on that aspect of Bloodwing Academy. And now’s the perfect time to dive into the series, as the final installment is within reach.

The Final Bloodwing Academy Book Comes Out In June, So There’s Time To Catch Up

The Wings That Bind Will Conclude The Series

The Wings That Bind Cover against a blurred and faded version of it

On Wings of Blood will give Fourth Wing fans another compelling romantasy book to dig into, and its sequels can keep them occupied in the wait for the next Empyrean Series book. Readers won’t need to worry about agonizing cliffhangers, either, as the third and final addition to Bloodwing Academy comes out on June 14. This makes it the ideal time to check out the indie series, as readers will be able to binge the entire thing soon enough. Those who enjoy it can also check out Boleyn’s Blood of a Fae series, too, which is set in the same world.
