OK, I’m Now More Concerned About Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Than Ever After Star Wars Celebration

There’s been plenty of speculation that Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, rumored to be тιтled Star Wars: New Jedi Order, isn’t really happening, but I wasn’t truly concerned until Star Wars Celebration 2025. New Jedi Order was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, and for a while, it seemed as though that movie and The Mandalorian and Grogu were at the forefront in terms of Star Wars’ upcoming movies. That turned out to be true for the latter, which will be the next Star Wars movie released on May 22, 2026.

Over time, the future of New Jedi Order was cast further in doubt, especially when the movie’s writer changed and with Rey actress Daisy Ridley’s updates that she had yet to see a script. This made the announcement of Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars movie, confirmed to be тιтled Star Wars: Starfighter, all the more shocking. In fact, this was arguably the biggest shock of all the Star Wars Celebration 2025 reveals. While I’m plenty excited about that new movie, following this announcement at Star Wars Celebration, I’m genuinely concerned about New Jedi Order’s future.

Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Was Barely Mentioned

This Was A Mᴀssive Difference From Star Wars Celebration 2023

Rey holding a light saber in The Rise of Skywalker

During Star Wars Celebration 2023, Daisy Ridley and her New Jedi Order movie were center stage. In fact, it had seemed as though this movie and Rey were the future of the franchise in some ways, especially because New Jedi Order was confirmed to be taking place 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars timeline, meaning it would be the furthest into the future we’ve gone so far in Star Wars. This only made it all the more obvious what a mᴀssive shift there was between Star Wars Celebration in 2023 and 2025.

This year, Rey and New Jedi Order were both barely mentioned all weekend. In fact, while many other new additions to Star Wars movies and TV shows were announced or given major updates, next to nothing was shared about the progress of Rey’s movie. Particularly given many had expected New Jedi Order to be the next Star Wars movie released after The Mandalorian and Grogu, this was a genuine surprise. What made this all the more bewildering (and concerning) was the fact that Starfighter seems to have replaced Rey’s Star Wars movie in multiple ways.

Starfighter Seems To Have Taken New Jedi Order’s Place

The Timeline And Focus On Starfighter Seem To Have Usurped New Jedi Order

There had long been rumors that Ryan Gosling would be joining Star Wars, and, in the weeks leading up to Star Wars Celebration 2025, there had even begun to be specific rumors about Gosling having a role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie. Given there had been very little revealed about Levy’s movie, though, that felt a bit like wishful thinking. It therefore shocked many, despite these rumors, when it was announced at Star Wars Celebration that Shawn Levy’s movie, Starfighter, would star Ryan Gosling and is confirmed to have a May 28, 2027, release date.

Additional details about Starfighter included that the movie would take place just a few years after The Rise of Skywalker. This signals that Starfighter is taking New Jedi Order’s place already, in a few ways. Not only has Starfighter seemingly taken the spotlight away from New Jedi Order, but also, it will now be this movie, not Rey’s, that will define this era in Star Wars.

When Rey’s movie was announced, it seemed all but confirmed that this movie would be the first movie or show set after The Rise of Skywalker, and that made sense. While it wasn’t clear whether Rey’s story would continue after that movie, or what would be done after the sequel trilogy more broadly, the sequels wrapped up in a way that positioned Rey as the future of the Jedi. Surely, if Star Wars was continuing that story, it would be done with Rey.

This also meant that New Jedi Order would have the freedom to shape what the future of Star Wars looked like. With Starfighter set after The Rise of Skywalker and confirmed to be the next movie release after The Mandalorian and Grogu, though, it will evidently be Starfighter that determines what the galaxy looks like in the wake of the First Order’s (and Final Order’s) fall. This raises some major questions about what Rey’s movie will or could look like now.

I Don’t Think The Movie Is Canceled… But It Won’t Look The Same

Starfighter’s Story Will Undoubtedly Influence What Rey’s Movie Can Do

To be honest, I don’t think New Jedi Order will actually be canceled. At this point, that would be a mᴀssive overhaul for Star Wars, and the movie has continued to be mentioned, despite those mentions being minimal. It’s also worth noting, it isn’t accurate to say it’s been delayed, even with the timeline of Starfighter, as New Jedi Order never had a confirmed release date.

However, I do think Starfighter means we won’t be getting the New Jedi Order many were expecting. For one, there are rumors that Gosling’s character will be Force-sensitive, as the clip of the тιтle seems to contain a flash of the Jedi Order symbol (or, at least, the lightsaber from that symbol). Given that, even the notion of the New Jedi Order could be altered by Starfighter. It may be some time before Star Wars offers a concrete answer about Star Wars: New Jedi Order, but after Star Wars Celebration 2025, I’m more concerned than ever.
