Following his appearances elsewhere in the Marvel universe, I’m more desperate for Moon Knight season 2 than ever before. When Moon Knight first premiered on Disney+ in 2022, it wasn’t just another Marvel series – it felt like something radically different. The show’s psychological edge, mythological leanings, and Oscar Isaac’s incredible performance made it one of the most distinctive entries in the MCU timeline. Yet after that explosive debut, the white-clad vigilante all but vanished. Now, with a few alternate universe appearances under his belt, it’s clear: Moon Knight season 2 isn’t just welcome – it’s essential.

The first season of Moon Knight followed Marc Spector, a mercenary with dissociative idenтιтy disorder (DID), who becomes the human avatar for the Egyptian god Khonshu. The series delved into trauma, idenтιтy, and mythology in ways that felt deeper and darker than most MCU projects. It wasn’t afraid to explore grief and fractured personalities, giving viewers a character unlike any other in the franchise. However, the show didn’t end with all the questions answered. In fact, its finale teased a brand-new alter – Jake Lockley – and left plenty of room for expansion.

Moon Knight Has Been Missing From The MCU Since His Season 1 Debut

The MCU Promised More Of Moon Knight

Since Moon Knight wrapped its first season, Marc Spector and his alters have been conspicuously absent from the mainline MCU. Despite Kevin Feige’s declaration that Moon Knight would appear in a film after his solo series, that moment hasn’t come. With every new Marvel film and Disney+ show that arrives without any mention of Moon Knight, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand why a character with such a unique angle is being kept on the sidelines.

It’s not just that Moon Knight is a fan favorite – it’s that he represents a new tone and storytelling possibility within the MCU. His psychological complexities and mythological connections could provide fresh layers to a cinematic universe that has, at times, struggled to stay innovative. Instead, audiences are left wondering why someone so compelling was introduced only to disappear.

What If…? Season 3 Brought Moon Knight Back, But Not In The Main MCU Timeline

What If…? Season 3, Episode 1 “What If… The Hulk Fought The Mech Avengers?”

Moon Knight did make a surprise return in the animated series What If…? season 3, specifically in the episode тιтled “What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?” In this alternate universe, Moon Knight is a fully-fledged member of the Avengers, who have turned to piloting giant mechs to combat the terrifying Apex Hulk. It’s wild, weird, and undeniably fun—but it’s not the Moon Knight we followed in season 1 of his live-action series.

This version of the character is essentially a cameo, a variant with no ties to the emotional arc we witnessed in the original series. He’s cool, sure, and his inclusion in the team of Mech Avengers adds flair, but he doesn’t bring with him the depth, trauma, or internal conflict that made Marc Spector so compelling. The show lets fans see a version of Moon Knight, but not the Moon Knight. It’s a playful diversion, but not a satisfying continuation.

Moon Knight Features In Marvel Zombies

The animated multiverse trend continues with Moon Knight’s confirmed appearance in the MCU’s Marvel Zombies, set to release in 2025. Like What If…?, this series will explore another alternate reality — one where the world has been ravaged by a zombie apocalypse, and heroes must survive against staggering odds. Moon Knight’s role is yet to be fully detailed, but it appears as though Moon Knight will be a Blade variant rather than Spector himself. While this could offer a fun, grittier, and bloodier take on the character, it’s hardly a sufficient Moon Knight follow-up.

Marvel Zombies is exciting in concept, it doesn’t address the core issue: none of these appearances move his story forward. Marvel Zombies will likely be another fun sandbox for Marvel to reimagine characters, but it’s not a sequel, not a deeper dive into his psychological labyrinth, and not part of the narrative that left fans hanging in 2022. These alternate universe projects serve as appetizers — but audiences are all still hungry for the main course.

Moon Knight Season 2 Still Seems The Best & Easiest Place For The Hero To Return Once More

Moon Knight Is Speculated To Appear In Avengers: Doomsday Or Avengers: Secret Wars

With no mainline MCU film or series featuring Moon Knight on the horizon, the most logical and satisfying place for him to return is in a second season of his own show. A follow-up season would not only allow Marvel to answer the questions left hanging – like Jake Lockley’s role, Layla’s new status as the Scarlet Scarab, and Khonshu’s long-term plans. This would also give the character room to breathe and evolve in his own narrative space.

Moon Knight’s story isn’t built for ensemble films yet. His arc is too internal, too focused on idenтιтy, trauma, and self-acceptance to get the development it deserves in a crowded crossover. Pushing him into a team-up film without resolving the threads from season 1 would shortchange both the character and the viewers who connected with his solo journey. Additionally, if Marvel waits too long, the emotional momentum from 2022 could be lost entirely.

Moreover, Moon Knight stands out tonally from other Marvel offerings. It’s darker, more experimental, and deeply psychological – qualities that deserve a space of their own. A second season wouldn’t just benefit the character; it would benefit the MCU by reintroducing variety and depth. With Oscar Isaac reportedly open to returning, there’s no better time than now to make it happen.

Many speculated that Moon Knight could appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which he certainly could. However, the character has been sidelined for so long he doesn’t feel very integral to the wider Marvel universe. Reestablishing him in a separate project first would make his introduction into an ensemble feel more pertinent and necessary, rather than simply throwing him in to tie up a loose thread. Moon Knight season 2 could properly prime the character for a team-up, perhaps even introducing other MCU characters to better transition from a solo adventure to an ensemble.

This makes Moon Knight season 2 less of a hopeful prospect and more of an absolute necessity. While these alternate universe Moon Knight cameos are fun distractions, they don’t move the needle. If Marvel really wants to do right by Moon Knight – and by the viewers who were captivated by his story – it needs to stop stalling.
