The Fantastic Four: First Steps Star Julia Garner Addresses Her Silver Surfer Look: “I Wasn’t Super Surprised”

Following the latest The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer, the Silver Surfer actor shares their reaction to the character’s Marvel Cinematic Universe design. After years of development, the MCU timeline is finally getting ready to introduce the Fantastic Four in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated reboot of Marvel’s First Family. One of the major characters coming to life from the Fantastic Four lore is Shalla-Bal, a.k.a. one of the Silver Surfers from the Marvel Comics canon, as this will mark her live-action debut.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Julia Garner finally opened up more about joining the MCU franchise as Silver Surfer, while also talking about the character’s look in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. When Garner was asked about her reaction to seeing herself as the Silver Surfer for the first time, she shared the following:

I wasn’t super surprised, because Matt showed me a mockup of it. I just thought it was so cool. It kind of oddly looked like … well, I don’t want to say fashion-y, but you could totally see it on, I felt like, a runway, which is something I always notice the best. The costume has to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, especially with Marvel. People love that. At the end of the day, it is a comic book. I’m excited to see it — I really haven’t seen anything besides the trailer and some mockup scenes, so it’s going to be interesting.

What Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer Comments Mean For The Fantastic Four: First Steps

As Silver Surfer is one of Marvel’s most compelling visual characters, bringing that look to life in live-action can definitely be a challenge. Given that Silver Surfer’s appearance is conveyed through a combination of motion-capture and VFX, there is only so much an actor can do on set. As such, Garner having an idea from Marvel Studios on what her character would look like while shooting her scenes in The Fantastic Four: First Steps seems key.

Based on Garner’s comments, it’s clear that a lot of thought went into adapting Silver Surfer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, especially with this being Shalla-Bal’s first time getting featured in a mᴀssive Marvel project outside the comics. While there have been some commentary about the VFX for Silver Surfer after the recent trailer, it’s crucial to remember that The Fantastic Four: First Steps is still likely finishing up a lot of its post-production work, including the visuals. By the time fans see Silver Surfer in theaters this summer, it’s likely that her VFX will look even better than they did in the latest trailer.

Julia Garner as Silver Surfer In The Fantastic Four First Steps Trailer

After hearing about Garner’s Silver Surfer experience, it will be exciting to see how her character fits into The Fantastic Four: First Steps story, but also where the MCU takes her next. Since the Fantastic Four characters will likely have more to do after The Multiverse Saga is over, it’s hard to imagine that the 2025 installment is a one-and-done for Garner’s Shalla-Bal. With only a few months left to go before The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters, MCU fans will soon know what to expect with the Silver Surfer in the franchise.
