Minecraft & Sinners Give Warner Bros. A Box Office Accomplishment The Studio Didn’t Achieve At All Last Year

Despite appealing to vastly different audiences, A Minecraft Movie and Sinners have marked a huge win for Warner Bros., which did not happen at all throughout 2024. A Minecraft Movie was released on April 4 and immediately became a box office hit. A Minecraft Movie has surpᴀssed $700 million worldwide, easily maintaining its place as the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of the year. Despite earning mixed reviews, A Minecraft Movie has already become a fan favorite, spawning several viral moments that have kept audiences talking about it.

The family-friendly video game movie has undoubtedly been a mᴀssive success for the studio so far, and that looks set to continue, as A Minecraft Movie is still bringing in millions every day. Though A Minecraft Movie is still drawing in audiences, its popularity has diminished somewhat, and in its third weekend, A Minecraft Movie was overtaken by Sinners for the number one spot. Sinners beat opening weekend projections, proving that there is strong audience interest in the film and giving Warner Bros. a much-needed boost.

Warner Bros. Had The Two Biggest Movies At The Box Office Last Weekend With A Minecraft Movie & Sinners

The Studio’s Success Comes From Vastly Different Movies

A Minecraft Movie has already been dominating the box office for several weeks now, but over the past weekend, Ryan Coogler’s new horror film Sinners opened in the #1 spot in a surprising twist. This now puts A Minecraft Movie in second place, and the religious movie, The King of Kings, came in third during the holiday weekend. For the weekend of April 18, 2025, Sinners earned $48 million and A Minecraft Movie earned $40.5 million domestically.

As of the time of writing, Sinners has grossed $71.3 million worldwide (via The Numbers). This is certainly more successful than it had been predicted to be, though some have wondered whether its current success will be overshadowed by Sinners‘ high budget, which reportedly falls somewhere between $90 and $105 million. Typically, it is estimated that movies need to earn 2.5x the budget to break even, but its opening weekend success certainly points Sinners in the right direction.

Movie

Domestic 3-Day Total

Worldwide Gross

Sinners

$48 million

$71.3 million

A Minecraft Movie

$40.5 million

$722.2 million

The King of Kings

$17.5 million

$51.3 million

The Amateur

$7 million

$64.6 million

Warfare

$4.85 million

$17.8 million

While it may take a few more weeks to truly see if Sinners can become profitable, its current position at the top of the charts proves that it is a worthwhile venture for Warner Bros. because it shows that audiences still have an interest in original movies. At the other end of the scale, A Minecraft Movie has found mᴀssive success as an IP venture. Overall, the movie has currently grossed $722.2 million, more than making back its $150 million budget (via The Numbers). These two successes could not have come at a better time for their shared studio.

Warner Bros. Hasn’t Had The Box Office’s Two Biggest Movies Since The End Of 2023

Other Major Studios Accomplished This Feat Last Year

Two Warner Bros. movies taking the two top spots in last weekend’s charts is a huge win for the studio because it failed to achieve this accomplishment all of last year. In fact, the last time that two Warner Bros. movies earned first and second at the box office was Wonka and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in the final weekend of 2023. While Wonka retained its #1 place for another week, Aquaman fell quickly behind moving into 2024.

However, multiple other studios accomplished this last year. For the weekend of June 7, 2024, Sony Pictures held 1st and 2nd with Bad Boys: Ride or Die and The Garfield Movie. Universal also held the top two places on the weekend of July 19, 2024, with Twisters and Despicable Me 4. Likewise, Walt Disney Studios and its subsidiary 20th Century Studios held this feat for several weeks with Alien: Romulus and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. Interestingly, each of these pairs is made up of two very different movies, much like A Minecraft Movie and Sinners.

Warner Bros. Still Had A Strong 2024 At The Box Office

Warner Bros. Had Several #1 Movies

Though the studio might not have held both of the top spots at any time during 2024, Warner Bros. did still have multiple #1 movies at the box office. Warner Bros. released several very successful IP films throughout the year, including Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Beyond being financially successful, Dune: Part Two won two Oscars. Both Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong entered the top 10 highest-grossing list for 2024.

While Disney and Universal may have had more entries in 2024’s top 10 list, boosting the studios’ intake for the year, Warner Bros definitely did not have a bad year overall.

Domestically, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was also one of the highest-grossing films of the year, showing that Warner Bros. still had good prospects. While Furiosa and Joker: Folie à Deux barely made back their budgets, both films still opened at #1. While Disney and Universal may have had more entries in 2024’s top 10 list, boosting the studios’ intake for the year, Warner Bros. definitely did not have a bad year overall. Instead, it is the sheer success of A Minecraft Movie and Sinners during a movie year that has seen diminishing returns that is most impressive.

A Minecraft Movie & Sinners Are The Box Office Hits Warner Bros. Desperately Needed

Industry Professionals Were Beginning To Question The Studio’s Standing

Despite having several hits during the middle of 2024, there has recently been some concern about the performance of Warner Bros. movies that were expected to fare better with audiences. At the beginning of 2025, there was even an announcement that several key figures within the studio had been let go (via Variety). Especially because many of the studio’s early 2025 releases were original films (including Sinners), there were concerns that the movies would be unable to find their audiences.

With movies like Furiosa and Joker: Folie à Deux under-performing and early 2025 releases like Mickey 17 failing to turn a profit, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav was reportedly looking for candidates to replace the studio heads (via The Hollywood Reporter). However, given that A Minecraft Movie and Sinners have both turned out to be big successes thus far, Warner Bros. and its executives currently seem more secure than they have been in months.
