A Minecraft Movie has hit a major global milestone. The movie, which was directed by Jared Hess and stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge, is inspired by the popular тιтular video game. The Minecraft Movie release kicked off with a domestic debut of $162.7 million, which marked the best opening weekend for a video game movie in history, besting 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.4 million). In addition to debuting at No. 1, it held that position for two consecutive weeks before being buffeted down by Sinners in its third weekend.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, A Minecraft Movie is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a cumulative gross of $344 million at the domestic box office and $376.8 million from international markets. This brings the movie to a cumulative global haul of $720.8 million, making it the first Hollywood movie of 2025 to cross the huge $700 million milestone worldwide. At the time of writing, it is also the second highest-grossing movie of the year so far worldwide, behind the Chinese hit Ne Zha 2 ($1.898 billion).
What This Means For A Minecraft Movie
The Movie Is An Unquestionable Hit
While there are still many more months left in the year in which other movies can pᴀss the $700 million milestone, the fact that the Minecraft Movie box office has climbed that high is a major achievement. So far in the 2020s, only 25 movies have grossed more than $700 million, including the two 2025 тιтles that have already done so. This puts the video game movie in an exclusive group that includes smash hits such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Avatar: The Way of Water, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, and Top Gun: Maverick.
Avatar: The Way of Water grossed $2.32 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
Additionally, while the Minecraft Movie budget is sizable and reportedly hit a whopping total of $150 million, its break-even point was most likely somewhere around $375 million. Not only has the movie hit that mark, it is well on its way toward doubling it. Given its current trajectory, it will most likely only be a matter of time before it becomes a billion-dollar movie, becoming the second video game movie after The Super Mario Bros. Movie to hit that lofty mark.
Our Take On The Minecraft Movie Milestone
It Will Remain One Of 2025’s Biggest Hits
By pᴀssing this huge milestone, it seems highly likely that A Minecraft Movie has secured itself a place in the Top 10 movies of 2025 before the year is more than one-third over. Although there are upcoming tentpoles that could gross more than $700 million, including Avatar: Fire and Ash and Wicked: For Good, so far in the 2020s, the maximum number of movies to hit that milestone in a single year was eight, in 2022 (which included three MCU movies, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Top Gun: Maverick).
