Every Creature & Mob In A Minecraft Movie, Explained

A Minecraft Movie is the long-awaited film adaptation of the extremely popular game, and one of the main draws of the project has been the various Easter Eggs and references to Minecraft that it contains. While there are some subtle inclusions, the most obvious are the creatures and mobs that appear throughout the entirety of A Minecraft Movie‘s story, from simple farm animals to some of the more unique enemies that the game has introduced.

While several more generic mobs aren’t unique to the game, each of them has a specific place in the game’s world that makes them feel unique to Minecraft. Even though A Minecraft Movie references and shows off a lot of mobs, there are plenty more that will more than likely be included in a potential Minecraft Movie sequel.

Villagers

Minecraft’s Most Helpful NPCs

In the game, villagers play a very similar role, living in villages and mostly serving as a way to trade to get rare or unique items. Each villager also has a unique profession in Minecraft, whether it be blacksmith, farmer, or librarian, which determines what they can trade.

Wandering Trader

Minecraft’s Less Helpful NPCs

Wandering Traders are very similar to villagers in Minecraft, with the same overall design and a similar but still unique function. In the movie, one appeared when Steve first brought the other characters to the village, albeit just as a background character. I

In the game, they will randomly spawn near the player, even outside of villages, with a random selection of trades, and they always appear with a pair of special llamas that will defend them. Their trades aren’t usually particularly helpful, but they can give out a few rare items that players would have a hard time finding otherwise.

Vindicator

Axe-Wielding Illagers

Vindicators are a type of illager, the evil villager variants that Minecraft has introduced over the years, and in A Minecraft Movie, they appear in the woodland mansion where the group needed to find another Earth Crystal. In the video game, they are some of the most dangerous enemies, as their axes deal a ton of damage, and if they manage to swarm someone, they can quickly take them out. They do appear in mansions, but they are also a big part of raids, where they arrive alongside other illager types like the evoker and pillager to destroy villages.

Iron Golem

Protectors Of Villages

Iron Golems show up mostly near the end of A Minecraft Movie, when the central heroes make an army of them to fight off the invading piglins. They are shown to be the very powerful defenders of the world against any hostile monster, and in the game, they have pretty much the same purpose. They can be created with blocks of iron and a pumpkin, as they were in the film, or they can naturally spawn if a village is big enough. They’ll fight any hostile mob that comes near, save for creepers, to avoid random explosions.

10

Piglin

The Nether’s Most Prolific Pigs

The Piglins were obviously one of the biggest parts of A Minecraft Movie, as they acted as the main antagonistic force throughout the entirety of the film. However, piglins in the game actually behave quite differently from their representation in the movie, as most of the time they are actually neutral mobs. If a player is wearing any piece of gold armor, most of these mobs won’t attack, and piglins can even be traded with for powerful items. However, the movie did accurately represent the fact that they do turn into zombies if they travel into the Overworld.

9

Hoglin

Slightly More Pig-Like Than Piglins

An image of two Hoglins inside the Nether in Minecraft

By their name alone, hoglins can easily be identified as relating to piglins, as they are the more bestial creatures that piglins ᴀssociate with. They appeared in the movie with piglin riders when Henry, Steve, and Garret were escaping the attack on the village, but despite their similarities, in the video game, the piglins’ only interaction with hoglins is to hunt them. They tend to wander around the Nether aimlessly, attacking any player on sight, and acting as the only real source of decent food in the whole dimension.

8

Ghast

Crying, Flying, Fireball-Blasting Monsters

Ghasts are mobs similarly found in the Nether, and in A Minecraft Movie, they act as the flying units of the piglin army throughout the film. They carry wooden platforms that bring piglin troops across the vast distances of the Overworld while shooting fireballs. While ghasts in Minecraft can’t carry creatures, they do shoot fireballs, and the happy ghast variant can actually be ridden by players and transport mobs around the world. They are the only source of ghast tears, which can be used when making potions to brew a potion of regeneration.

7

Creeper

Minecraft’s Most Iconic Denizens

Creepers are undoubtedly the most iconic and one of the scariest mobs in Minecraft, essentially acting as the face of the franchise as a whole. They have a whole scene dedicated to them in A Minecraft Movie, when Steve, Henry, and Garrett are making their way through the redstone mines, and they have to traverse through Steve’s unfinished creeper farm. The movie portrays them pretty accurately, though they are much more aggressive in the game, as they will try to explode whenever they go near a player, as opposed to waiting until they are hit to blow up.

6

Zombie

The Most Basic Minecraft Mob

Minecraft Player Attacked By Zombie Horde

Zombies are the easiest Minecraft mob to understand, as they are pretty much exactly what one would expect a zombie to be. In the movie, they appeared at the beginning, when the humans were surviving their first night, being one of the primary threats. In the game, zombies occupy pretty much the same role, being a fairly dangerous melee threat for the first few nights, but providing very little danger for most of the game. They do have unique mechanics, being able to pick up armor and weapons to use, as well as the ability to summon reinforcements.

5

Skeleton

Dangerous, Ranged, Unᴅᴇᴀᴅ Monsters

Skeletons are also very simple mobs, as the skeleton is one of the most common enemies that exist in all sorts of video games and movies. A Minecraft Movies opening pretty much showed off all they have to offer, as they are generally quite dangerous, with their very accurate long-range bow attacks remaining ᴅᴇᴀᴅly even during the later stages of the game. There are also multiple variant skeletons in the game, with strays being able to slow players and spawning in snow biomes, the bogged, who poison their enemies in the swamp, and Wither skeletons in the Nether.

4

Spider

Minecraft’s Creepy Crawlies

Spiders are yet another hostile mob shown off during the opening scenes of A Minecraft Movie, standing next to skeletons and zombies as some of the most common monsters in the game. They skitter towards players to attack and are able to climb up walls to get to their targets, as one would expect a spider to do.

Spiders in Minecraft also have a variant called cave spiders, which can poison enemies and only spawn in abandoned mineshafts.

In the game, spiders have an interesting and unique mechanic, where they become neutral mobs during the daytime, and will only become hostile if a player attacks them first. However, in caves and similar structures, spiders will always be immediately hostile.

3

Endermen

Tall, Dark, And Terrifying

A blocky creature with glowing purple eyes in A Minecraft Movie

The Endermen are one of Minecraft‘s most unique mobs, even though they were inspired by the Slenderman creepypasta. Only one Enderman appears in A Minecraft Movie, but it is accompanied by a very important scene, where Henry accidentally looks at its eyes and sees a vision of his friends turning against him. In the game, Endermen are some of the most dangerous mobs out there, as, if a player looks into their eyes, they will immediately become hostile and attack, teleporting around to evade attacks and dealing a ton of damage per hit.

2

Spider Jockey

The Range Of A Skeleton And The Speed Of A Spider

A spider jockey shooting an arrow in A Minecraft Movie

Spider jockeys are a mob type that consists of a skeleton riding on top of a spider, which were seen during the opening scenes of A Minecraft Movie. While much less weight was given to their appearance than the other jockey mob on this list, they are still a unique aspect of the game that was well-integrated into the movie. With the speed and wall-climbing abilities of a spider combined with the powerful ranged attacks of a skeleton, spider jockeys are very dangerous, though they have a very low chance of spawning in the game.

Chicken Jockey

The Team-Up That No One Saw Coming

A zombie and chicken in A Minecraft Movie

The Chicken Jockey scene in A Minecraft Movie was the biggest meme that arose, in which a baby zombie riding a chicken faced off against Garrett. The scene was very funny, which seemed very fitting for the chicken jockey, as it is one of the sillier mobs that Minecraft has introduced. In the video game, chicken jockeys rarely appear, with each zombie only having a 0.25% chance of spawning as a chicken jockey. However, A Minecraft Movie didn’t show that baby zombies can also jump onto the backs of other mobs, including sheep, cows, or even other zombies.
