Star Wars’ next theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is gaining a lot of hype after footage was shown yesterday at Star Wars Celebration 2025, but fans still hate the film’s тιтle. The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced early in 2024 and is set to take place after the events of The Mandalorian season 3. Not much is known about the plot at this point, but it’s clear that Din Djarin and Grogu are still working with the New Republic out of Adelphi Base.
While plot details still aren’t clear, the first footage from The Mandalorian and Grogu—which was seen live from Japan by ScreenRant’s very own Molly Brizzell and James Hunt—confirmed much of what had already been rumored about the film. This includes the appearance of Sigourney Weaver as a New Republic official. Despite all this, the тιтle still continues to receive a backlash in the fan community; many are complaining it’s too simplistic, reflecting an annoying trend seen in тιтles like Andor, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. What’s going on?
Lucasfilm Understand That Character Names Are Powerful Brands
Character Names Hold Weight Within Media
Lucasfilm continues to name their shows and movies after their characters for a very simple reason; the character names are recognizable. Star Wars has created so many iconic and beloved characters in the nearly 50 years since it first graced our screens, so much so that there are aspects of Star Wars that have just made their way into our zeitgeist. It’s at a point where people don’t have to be familiar with Star Wars at all to know what the Force or lightsabers are.

The same goes for other character names, like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Whether someone was a fan of the original or prequel trilogies, it’s likely they know who the character is and may be interested in seeing a solo adventure centered around that character. This trend can also be attributed to the success of franchises like Marvel who name their тιтles after their main characters, especially in the franchise’s early stages. With Star Wars still establishing its brand on the Disney+ side of things, it’s not surprising that it’s relying on the names of its most beloved characters.
Star Wars Fans Are Disappointed With The Formula
It’s Time For More Creativity
Since The Mandalorian first premiered, it was clear that there was a severe lack of any kind of creativity when it came to naming Lucasfilm shows. It’s disappointing that this simplistic, and frankly boring formula has continued with The Mandalorian and Grogu. With great тιтles already established in the franchise like The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith, it’s hard to believe that the best Lucasfilm could come up with is The Mandalorian and Grogu.
This one makes a measure of business sense given the brands involved; that said, we’re hoping Lucasfilm hear the comments and start switching things up a little. With movies by Taika Waiтιтi and Dave Filoni on the way that are still unnamed, there’s still hope for something more creative. While fans can still be disappointed in the тιтle The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s no doubt that we cannot wait for the film to be released on May 26, 2026.
