Sinners Prequel & Sequel Chances Addressed By Michael B. Jordan After Record-Setting Rotten Tomatoes Debut

Warning: Major SPOILERS lie ahead for Sinners! As audiences finally get to experience Ryan Coogler’s record-setting movie, Michael B. Jordan shares his thoughts on a possible Sinners follow-up. The period horror movie centers on twin brothers Smoke and Stack, played by Jordan, returning to their Mississippi hometown in 1932 to open a juke joint after leaving a criminal career behind in Chicago, only for their grand opening to be tormented by vampires drawn to a musician in the club. Sinners has garnered near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike, netting both Jordan and Coogler’s highest live-action Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Now, in honor of the movie’s release, GamesRadar+ interviewed Jordan and Coogler to discuss Sinners. When asked about the possibility of a prequel exploring the brothers’ Chicago days, or a sequel exploring Stack’s years as a vampire after the movie’s ending, Jordan confirmed he was open to the possibility of either, denoting it would ultimately come down to Coogler, who humorously pointed to his wife and producing partner as also being part of the process. See what Jordan and Coogler said below:

Michael B. Jordan: I mean, you know, I’m always… I’d be up for it. Not saying he wouldn’t, but he calls the sH๏τs!

Ryan Coogler: I call the sH๏τs? Zinzi?! I mean, no, for me, my favorite movies are ones where it feels like a world was happening before, and a world is gonna happen after.

Jordan: Yeah, that you care about the characters, and that you wanna see what happened to ’em? What happened before?

What Jordan & Coogler’s Comments Mean For Sinners’ Future

The Writer/Director Has Already Expressed His Doubts

This isn’t the first time Coogler has commented on the possibility of a sequel to expand on Sinners‘ ending, having previously downplayed his desire to do so as he wanted to create “a full meal” with his story. That being said, both his previous response to it, and the above, don’t have an explicit statement from the writer/director of being averse to a follow-up of the movie either, but rather not having written it with the intention of producing a franchise out of it.

With Jordan expressing an openness to revisit the world, though, his longtime collaboration with Coogler could have the star lead the charge with someone else in the director’s chair. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened, as Coogler’s busy schedule with the first Black Panther led to Creed II being helmed by Steven Caple Jr., while he instead executive produced it. Additionally, Jordan recently branched out to the director’s chair with Creed III and has frequently expressed his interest in directing more in the future.

As for a potential story for a follow-up, there are multiple angles for a prequel to take with the movie. Much like GamesRadar+ asked in their interview, a prequel could explore Smoke and Stack’s time in Chicago working for the mob, while another could explore the origins of Jack O’Connell’s lead vampire Remmick, whose backstory was kept largely under wraps in the movie. A sequel, meanwhile, could chronicle some of Stack and Mary’s time as vampires after being revealed to survive in Sinners‘ ending, be it the 60 years between the movie’s timelines or the modern day.
