Jack Black & Michael Cera’s Historical Comedy With 14% RT Score Climbing Streaming Charts 15 Years Later

A generally disliked historical comedy starring Jack Black and Michael Cera is now trending on a major streaming chart. Both stars are known for the comedy genre and, despite their ages being 19 years apart, first rose to prominence in the early 2000s. For Jack Black, his major breakthrough came when he starred in Richard Linklater’s 2003 movie School of Rock, a project that he followed with roles in a wide variety of comedy movies such as the romantic comedy The Holiday, the war movie satire Tropic Thunder, and the absurd Lucha Libre movie Nacho Libre.

Michael Cera also had his breakout role in 2003 when he first appeared as George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, a role he would play through 2006 before the cult Fox sitcom went off the air and was rebooted on Netflix a decade later. In the wake of the end of the series, he transitioned into being a movie star, with some of his most prominent comedy тιтles being the high school movie Superbad, the teen pregnancy satire Juno, and the video game-inflected action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Year One Has Found A Streaming Audience

It Is The Only Movie Featuring Both Michael Cera & Jack Black

2009’s Year One, the only movie to star Michael Cera and Jack Black together, has had a streaming boom after a decade and a half. Directed by Harold Ramis, who also co-wrote the screenplay, the movie follows two exiled primitive hunter-gatherers who are kicked out of their tribe and, when they encounter biblical characters, discover that civilization has developed considerably elsewhere in the world. The movie, which also starred Oliver Platt, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plᴀsse, Juno Temple, Olivia Wilde, and Hank Azaria, was not well-regarded, earning a 14% score on Rotten Tomatoes with a nearly matching audience score of 24%.

Jack Black executive produced the 2015 movie Entertainment, in which Cera appeared, though Black did not perform onscreen in the movie.

Now, Year One has appeared on the daily Hulu chart of the most-watched movies on the platform in the United States. After arriving on the platform on April 1, the movie first appeared on the chart at the No. 10 position on April 17. The following day, it rose to No. 6 on the chart, where it has so far maintained its position for an additional day. It is the fourth-oldest movie on the chart, behind 2006’s The Da Vinci Code at No. 5, 2007’s Superbad at No. 4, and 2004’s Garfield at No. 7. See the full chart below:

What This Means For Year One

It Arrived On Hulu At The Right Time

While the presence of another Michael Cera movie, Superbad, on the list indicates that he may also be a major draw for streaming audiences,Year One‘s success in spite of its rotten reputation could also be due to the fact that it comes in the middle of a Jack Black renaissance. Although he had a string of disappointments in the early 2010s, since starring in 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Black has been part of several major modern hits including the billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. Movie and the smash hit A Minecraft Movie, which is currently in theaters.
