The Fantastic Four: First Steps official trailer has reminded me why Pedro Pascal was the perfect casting choice over another fan-favorite. Marvel’s first family has been highly anticipated for years, and they will finally be making their MCU debut in a few months. Fans got a tease of what was to come earlier in the year, but the official trailer dropping marks several confirmations about the film’s direction. The main villains of the movie will be Silver Surfer and Galactus, and Sue is pregnant, meaning that Franklin Richards will be coming to the MCU.
The trailer was also our first real glance at the Fantastic Four in action. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm are all shown in combat as their powers are in play. It’s especially of note that this is the first time that we’re fully seeing Reed’s abilities. While the other members’ powers have been shown off before, Reed’s powers stayed hidden. It made the reveal hit harder in the official trailer, and Pascal’s portrayal of the iconic character seems very promising.
Pedro Pascal Looks Like A Great Reed Richards In The Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer
Pascal has become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood in recent years. He’s proven his acting range through major franchises like The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, so his talent was never something in question. However, it’s natural for longtime fans to have their reservations about casting news when it concerns an iconic character. Fans just want the studio to do right by their favorites, especially when they’re from such a highly anticipated franchise. Luckily for Fantastic Four fans, Pascal looks great as Reed in the First Steps trailer.
From the scenes we’ve seen of Pascal so far, he embodies Reed’s personality. When in front of the public, he speaks with an eloquent poise that helps sell the fact that he’s a beloved hero. His mannerisms are on point, and he bounces off the other members of the cast well chemistry-wise. The emotional moments between Reed and Sue already seem to be playing out well, and he has friendly banter with his brother-in-law Johnny. He’s also shown to be a supportive friend to Ben. Family is the core of the Fantastic Four, and Pascal is nailing that dynamic.
I’m Glad We Got Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards Instead Of John Krasinski
For a long time, John Krasinski was the top fan-cast to play Reed in the MCU’s eventual Fantastic Four remake because of how similar the actor looked to the comic character. The buzz around him potentially playing the MCU’s version of Reed grew so much that Marvel actually delivered, casting Krasinski as Reed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite some fans’ excitement upon seeing him on screen, that Reed variant met a quick demise at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. It was then left unclear if Krasinski would carry on as Reed in the main timeline.
The glimpses of Reed we’ve seen so far show how promising Pascal’s portrayal will be, and Marvel was still able to satisfy the fan-cast with his Multiverse of Madness cameo without actually casting him for the main team.
Some fans were disappointed that Krasinski isn’t reprising his role in the MCU, but they shouldn’t feel too worried about their beloved character. The glimpses of Reed we’ve seen so far show how promising Pascal’s portrayal will be, and Marvel was still able to satisfy the fan-cast with his Multiverse of Madness cameo without actually casting him for the main team. Pascal has shown his dedication and care to the character, and he is ultimately a great choice for the MCU to go forward with beyond The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
