A Minecraft Movie, which is based on the тιтular video game, is going head-to-head with Sinners. The release of A Minecraft Movie kicked off by debuting at No. 1 at the domestic box office with a $162.7 million 3-day total, which is the best ever for a video game movie. It held that position in its second weekend despite compeтιтion from a raft of new releases including The King of Kings, Drop, Warfare, and The Amateur. The newest contender for the No. 1 spot is the period-set horror movie Sinners, which reteams director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Sinners is projected to debut at No. 2 at the domestic box office with a 3-day total of $40 million that falls just short of the $45 million projections for A Minecraft Movie, which will take No. 1 for the third consecutive weekend. However, this total means that Sinners has earned the best-ever Easter opening weekend for an R-rated movie, handily besting the $33 million opening weekend earned by David Fincher’s Panic Room in 2002. It has also earned the 11th best Easter weekend debut of all time among movies of all ratings.

The fact that both movies are Warner Bros. Pictures productions also means that the studio is back in good standing after the wobbly box office performance of their splashy Bong Joon Ho sci-fi movie Mickey 17, which only grossed $130.6 million against its reported $118 million budget.

What This Means For Sinners

The Horror Movie Could Become A Solid Success

In addition to the Sinners release breaking a record for Easter weekend, it has also earned one of the best opening weekends for an R-rated horror movie in general. This includes outgrossing the debuts of every Scream movie but Scream VI, which opened with $44.4 million and legged out to a worldwide total of $166.6 million. This is good news for the movie, because it is under significant financial pressure due to the sizable Sinners budget, which is reportedly somewhere around $100 million. Because movies typically need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters in order to break even, this most likely means that the Ryan Coogler movie’s break-even point is roughly $250 million. While this opening weekend does not necessarily indicate that it will hit that milestone, it puts it on track to potentially be a solid success, especially when combined with its eventual VOD release.

Sinners and A Minecraft Movie simultaneously ruling the box office continues the growth that 2025 has seen since the latter тιтle debuted in early April. Because the box office is no longer being ruled by a single tentpole hit, this offers hope that multiple upcoming movies will perform similarly well, fostering even more growth across the board as the year continues. This is entirely possible, as the upcoming slate of movies contains promising тιтles such as The Accountant 2, Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and the live-action Lilo & Sтιтch.
