Alex Garland’s A24 War Movie Hits Major Box Office Milestone In Just 10 Days

Alex Garland‘s new A24 war movie has hit a major box office milestone. Garland is a filmmaker who got his start as a novelist and screenwriter. His 1996 novel The Beach was adapted into a movie by screenwriter John Hodge and director Danny Boyle, leading to a fruitful working relationship with Boyle that saw he and Garland collaborate on a number of movies including 2002’s 28 Days Later, its upcoming 2025 sequel 28 Years Later, and 2002’s Sunshine.

He has also risen to prominence as a director after making his debut with the 2014 sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, which he also wrote. The following Alex Garland movies, all of which he both wrote and directed, were the heady 2018 sci-fi adaptation Annihilation, the satirical 2022 horror movie Men, and the dystopian 2024 action movie Civil War. Although Annihilation was distributed by Paramount Pictures, notable indie entertainment company A24 distributed Ex Machina, later distributing Men, Civil War, and his new war movie, in addition to producing the latter two.

Warfare Continues To Climb The Chart

The Alex Garland Movie Debuted On April 11

Warfare has now pᴀssed an important domestic milestone. Alex Garland co-wrote and co-directed the movie with Civil War‘s military advisor Ray Mendoza based on Mendoza’s experience during the Iraq War following the Battle of Ramadi. The ensemble cast features many rising stars, including D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Joseph Quinn, Charles Melton, Noah Centineo, and Michael Gandolfini. The Warfare release kicked off on April 11, debuting at No. 4 with an $8.3 million opening weekend.

Warfare debuted behind fellow new releases The Amateur (No. 3) and The King of Kings (No. 2) in addition to the sophomore weekend of the smash hit A Minecraft Movie (No. 1).

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Warfare is projected to earn a 3-day total of $4.65 million by the end of its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office. In addition to seeing it drop just one spot to No. 5, this brings the movie’s cumulative domestic box office total to $16.9 million, pᴀssing the $15 million milestone after just 10 days in theaters. It is the 27th release of 2025 to have pᴀssed this milestone, with the most recent being the new release horror movie Sinners, which is projected to debut with $40 million.

What This Means For Warfare

It Isn’t Performing As Well As Civil War

2025’s Warfare is not performing as well as Civil War, which reached the $15 million domestic milestone after just two days on its way to earning $127.3 million worldwide and becoming the second highest-grossing A24 movie of all time. However, its expectations are different, as its $20 million budget is significantly lower than Civil War‘s $50 million, which made it A24’s most expensive movie at the time. This likely places its break-even point at roughly $50 million, which is a milestone it has a much easier chance of hitting, even if it may need a boost from VOD and streaming.
