Following the newest trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps, I’m now even more confident that the new MCU team is going to fail. As seen in the trailers thus far, it’s been established that this alternate reality set in the retro-futuristic ’60s has the world absolutely adoring The Fantastic Four. However, that only serves to make me even more sure that Marvel’s First Family is going to be facing a challenge they likely won’t be able to overcome.
It’s been established that Fantastic Four: First Steps will not be an origin story. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm will have already had their powers for some time by the start of the movie, and it seems they’ve already taken on a few threats, justifying their mᴀssive celebrity status and television appearances. That said, I’m willing to bet that Fantastic Four: First Steps will be the first time the new MCU family faces truly overwhelming odds, forcing them to make some hard decisions by the movie’s end.
After Fantastic Four’s New Trailer, I’m Confident The New MCU Team Will Fail Against Galactus
The World Devourer Is Likely Too Powerful To Stop
In the newest Fantastic Four trailer, it’s very much established that the FF are beloved heroes and major celebrities in this alternate reality. They’re on television and have various product endorsements. The public loves them, as proven by the multiple civilians thanking the quartet and expressing their graтιтude to their protectors, who live high above in the Baxter Building. Keeping that in mind, it’s not hard to predict that this entire status quo is going to be mᴀssively upended.
Sure enough, the coming of the Silver Surfer heralding the coming of Galactus is the perfect threat that is clearly shaking the Fantastic Four to their core. This is particularly true for Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, who is prominently featured in this new trailer. Despite being the Smartest Man Alive, Mister Fantastic is unable to guarantee the public’s safety when questioned by reporters. Combined with Reed later crossing out equations with the foreboding comment that “there’s not enough time“, his promise to the public at the trailer’s end that The Fantastic Four will protect them feels pretty hollow.
As Their Celebrity Status Falls Apart, The Fantastic Four Will Be Divided
Should They Stay And Fight, Or Leave To Survive?
The major threat posed by Galactus will likely see the public fearing for their lives, which in turn could likely lead to a loss of faith in The Fantastic Four. Furthermore, it also seems like the team itself may be divided about what they should do. I feel like there’s a good chance the family will have to choose between saving themselves or trying to protect the world from Galactus, despite the odds not being in their favor. Likewise, Sue Storm being pregnant will likely make things even more complex.
It’s worth noting that this new trailer does seem to be teasing Reed’s desire to evacuate the planet and keep his family safe, while Sue wants to stay, unwilling to abandon this world and wanting The Fantastic Four to remain its protectors no matter how big the threat (and it’s pretty mᴀssive). If so, the harsh reality of Galactus and the need for sacrificial heroism is going to be fascinating, especially if it’s the first time the MCU team is faced with an actual challenge, unlike anything they’ve had to deal with before.
Will The Fantastic Four Be Seeking Redemption in Avengers: Doomsday?
A Major MCU Loss Is Certainly Possible
It’s important to remember that all four Fantastic Four actors are confirmed to appear in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be successful in saving their Earth from Galactus. While I do expect and hope that The Fantastic Four will stay until the bitter end and exhaust all resources to try and stop the World Devourer from consuming their world, I’m not going to be surprised if they tragically fail.
There needs to be some kind of reason for The Fantastic Four to encounter the Avengers of the main MCU reality. The Fantastic Four becoming multiversal refugees who tragically lost their world and failed to save those who had been depending on them to keep them safe would brutally make sense. At any rate, I’m very excited to see how it all turns out when Fantastic Four: First Steps releases later this year, however dark it might get.
Fantastic Four: First Steps releases in theaters on July 25th from Marvel Studios.
