Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer and Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni offers an update on his as-yet-unтιтled Star Wars movie. First announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Filoni’s debut live-action feature film is intended to wrap up the various story threads from the Disney+ shows set in the post-Return of the Jedi era of the New Republic. Filoni’s own Ahsoka series, which sees Rosario Dawson play the live-action version of the animated character first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is expected to play a major role in helping to set up the climactic conclusion to The Mandalorian era shows.
Speaking with Collider at this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Filoni addressed the considerable time it is taking to develop his movie. He explained that one of the reasons behind the film’s extended development process is his attraction to working on large story arcs, something he has done ever since The Clone Wars. Revealing that he is constantly looking at the various projects he is simultaneously working on, he is continually moving the pieces together into his grand, overarching strategy. Check out his comments below:
It’s a long development. One of the reasons why is I like to work on very large arcs, and I try to factor in all the things that I’m creating simultaneously and look at them and say, ‘Well, how do we do unique things? What are unique set pieces, and where is the story going? What’s the play of the story?’ I ask myself these questions. I have general outlines for all these things, general timelines for all these things. I keep moving the pieces on the board for a big strategy. That’s the way I’ve always worked since I started on Clone Wars, and I got to the end of that series finally.
Filoni also revealed that projects like Ahsoka season 2, which is soon scheduled to begin filming, might change things in his grander timeline. Admitting that while his process is a “balancing act,” he already has several scenes worked out and inserts them where they fit within the broader strategy. Check out his final comments below:
You keep that in your mind in the future while you’re working on the present. So, right now, I’ll be on Season 2 [of Ahsoka], and as those stories develop, it might change things that would affect what’s happening in the future and what I would do. At times, it’s a balancing act, but I’m constantly working at it, working out scenes. I know several scenes and where they would go, so you just kind of plug it in as you go.
What Dave Filoni’s Comments Mean For His Star Wars Movie
His Own Storytelling Strategy Reflects That Of His Mentor
Often regarded as George Lucas’ protégé, Filoni’s time working alongside the original Star Wars creator has left an indelible mark on his storytelling process. In many ways, Filoni’s most recent comments echo many of Lucas’ own reflexive approach to crafting his Star Wars movies, with the veteran filmmaker well known for allowing the various changes and decisions in one movie to flow on to shape the next. It is an approach that has allowed many beloved characters, such as the once mysterious Boba Fett, to evolve into different roles from what was first planned and envisioned from the outset.
Nonetheless, Filoni still appears to have a larger endgame in mind for his eventual Star Wars movie, and the events of Ahsoka season 2 will likely play a major role in helping to set that up. It is an approach that many fans would appreciate, given that many of the criticisms leveled at the sequel trilogy have revolved around the lack of a grander, overarching development strategy. Hopefully, Filoni’s approach will help avoid many of the pitfalls experienced by other films in the franchise and serve to bring the Mandalorian era to a satisfactory conclusion.
Our Take On Ahsoka Season 2’s Role In Setting Up Filoni’s Movie
The Show Has Introduced Threats Too Big To Be Resolved Easily
While shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have both introduced several key story threads throughout their respective runs, few have had as wide-reaching implications for the state of the Star Wars galaxy as those introduced in Ahsoka season 1. With the show’s season finale setting the stage for both Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return and Baylan Skoll’s quest to unravel the mystery of the Mortis gods, Filoni has already introduced two very different and far more powerful threats well beyond the nefarious schemes of The Mandalorian’s Moff Gideon.
Given the levels of potential danger that both characters pose, it seems unlikely that Ahsoka season 2 will serve to resolve either of their own story arcs over the span of just a few episodes. Instead, both Thrawn and the Mortis gods will likely carry over into Filoni’s Star Wars movie, providing him with the kind of climactic stakes necessary to deliver a meaningful and memorable conclusion to the Mandalorian era.
