Glen Powell To Star In & Co-Write Original Comedy With Judd Apatow

Glen Powell is now involved in an original comedy movie with Judd Apatow. After breaking out with his part in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, Powell has become known for films such as Anyone But You and Twisters. This year, he was a guest star voice actor in Family Guy and is set to appear in The Running Man and Huntington. As for Apatow, he is an Emmy-winning writer, producer, and director behind projects like the HBO series Girls and the movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Powell and Apatow are now collaborating on a new project. The movie will be an original comedy for Universal, which is unтιтled. Powell will star in the film and co-write the script with Apatow. Apatow will also direct the project. It will be produced by Powell, Dan Cohen, and Kevin Misher. While it does not have a release date, the movie is reportedly a priority for Universal, and it will be fast-tracked. An early synopsis says the movie is about “a country western star in free fall.”

What This Means For Powell

Powell Has Been A Screenwriter Before

This Apatow project will further Powell’s status as a multi-hyphenate talent in Hollywood. While there are plenty of actors who make their way into producing, it is rare for an A-lister to engage in the writing side of things. Powell made his feature screenwriting debut with Hit Man in 2024. This latest movie will further this effort, as Powell will serve as an actor, writer, and producer.

Collaborating with Apatow will also give Powell another edge in his work in Hollywood. The actor has already worked with indie darling Richard Linklater and box office marvel Joseph Kosinski, showing his ability to work with a range of directorial styles. The Running Man is directed by famed British filmmaker Edgar Wright. Apatow is another major voice within the movie and TV industry, so working with him will give Powell another chance to collaborate with some of the most notable voices in the industry.

Our Take On This New Project

Powell Is The Perfect Choice For The Role

I will be fascinated to see what Powell and Apatow are able to come up with for this upcoming comedy. Powell is a charismatic actor who is able to carry comedic roles well, so he is well-suited to this film’s genre. As for the plot, the fact that it centers around a country western star will kind of fit a Powell archetype created by Twisters. Powell himself is from Texas, making him an even better candidate to play this type of role in this exciting new project.
