Sophie Thatcher’s Sci-Fi Thriller With A 94% RT Score Is Now Streaming On Max, And It Sets Up A Fun Double Feature Opportunity

The sci-fi thriller, Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher, has been receiving high praise since its release and is now available to stream on Max for a possible fun double feature. Thatcher began her career in 2015 in the short movie Growing Strong, before making guest appearances on television shows including Chicago P.D. and The Exorcist, where she played a younger version of Regan MacNeil. She later received worldwide recognition for her debut feature role as Cee in the Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell movie, Prospect, which has since been ranked as one of the best low-budget sci-fi movies released in recent years.

Sophie Thatcher has since received acclaim for her roles as Sadie Harper in the Stephen King supernatural horror movie, The Boogeyman, and as the teenage Natalie Scattorcio in the thriller drama series, Yellowjackets. She has been critically praised for her strong and convincing performances across the horror genres and has been recognized as a “scream queen.” Thatcher has most recently starred in the 2025 movie, Companion, which has a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The sci-fi thriller offers a dark and terrifying story similar to Thatcher’s dark character story in Yellowjackets, and can now be streamed online.

Companion Is Now Streaming On Max – What The Movie Is About

Sophie Thatcher Stars As Iris In Companion

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion follows Iris (Thatcher), a woman who is happily in a relationship with her boyfriend, Josh (Jack Quaid). The two decide to take a trip away to an isolated lakehouse, to meet up with some friends, but it isn’t long after they arrive that their weekend away spirals downwards in chaos, horror, and violence. It is revealed to Iris that she is a companion robot, initially built to look after her partner’s needs for companionship and love, but Josh has dark plans for her that place everyone at the lakehouse in danger.

Companion has been described as a movie that has many twists and turns, but has also been clever not to give any critical spoilers away to audiences in their trailers. Companion’s director, Drew Hancock, spoke in an interview about the challenges faced by the production team in ensuring they provided a “fresh experience” for viewers. Hancock also spoke about the struggles he faced in casting the role of Iris, before Sophie Thatcher was cast; he described Thatcher as “amazing” and that he “[couldn’t] imagine anyone else in that role.” Companion has been ranked as Sophie Thatcher’s best horror movie and can now be streamed on Max.

Sophie Thatcher Also Stars In Heretic, Which Is Also Available On Max

Heretic Was Directed By Scott Beck & Bryan Woods

Sophie Thatcher as Sister Barnes in Heretic

Reviews of Companion have praised the movie for its cast, direction, masterful blend of the comedy and horror genres and its ability to “surprise but not outsmart viewers” with its plot twists. Sophie Thatcher was widely praised for her performance as Iris and many critics consider Companion the movie that solidifies her skills as a leading horror actor (via Vulture). Companion’s arrival on Max comes at a time when another of Thatcher’s horror movies, Heretic, is available for streaming. In Heretic, Thatcher plays Sister Barnes, a Mormon missionary who gets caught up in a fight against a cryptic recluse.

In reviews for Heretic, Thatcher was commended for her convincing and harrowing performance of Sister Barnes, with critics praising her emotive skills and her scene where she engages in a verbal dispute with Hugh Grant’s Reed. Her performance in Heretic has been positively compared to Companion, and they solidify her as a strong actor in future horror movies (via Variety). Thatcher’s performance in Companion proves her skills as a leading horror performer and its availability for streaming on Max has set up the opportunity for viewers to double stream it alongside Heretic.
