The final Thunderbolts* trailer may have secretly revealed how the тιтular MCU team will defeat Sentry and the Void. Aside from the mysterious meaning of the asterisk in the Thunderbolts* тιтle, how exactly a team of rather grounded anti-heroes will defeat a nearly invincible villain like Sentry and his Void alter ego is the biggest question surrounding Thunderbolts*‘ plot. By himself, Sentry is one of the most powerful characters in the whole Marvel universe. Add the Void, and Lewis Pullman’s MCU villain easily overshadows villains like Thanos, Hela, and Kang the Conqueror.
All the Thunderbolts* trailers and clips have kept Sentry’s fully-costumed appearance a secret and have only shown limited footage of Thunderbolts*‘ final battle. As suggested by the trailers, Sentry will use his Void powers to turn NYC citizens into shadows, and he’ll seemingly take over a portion of Manhattan. Meanwhile, the MCU’s Thunderbolts team is composed of three super soldiers, two ᴀssᴀssins, and one phase-shifting thief. Sentry vastly overpowers the Thunderbolts. In fact, most of the Avengers would fail to stop Sentry and his Void alter ego if it came down to sheer power.
Thunderbolts*’ Final Trailer Suggests Sentry & The Void Don’t Really Kill People
Sentry’s Void Powers May Not Be Lethal After All
Previous Thunderbolts* trailers have shown Sentry’s darkness-based Void powers taking over New York and transforming pedestrians into shadows in the blink of an eye. The Thunderbolts* “absolute cinema” trailer revealed some puzzling sH๏τs, such as Yelena Belova meeting a clone of herself. Now, the final Thunderbolts* trailer unveils a couple of new sH๏τs in what appear to be illusions or hallucinations where Yelena interacts with herself and revisits moments from her past. Hence, Yelena’s illusions may be a direct result of Sentry’s Void powers.
Instead of being transformed into actual shadows, Sentry’s victims might be sent to another realm or dimension
Instead of being transformed into actual shadows, Sentry’s victims might be sent to another realm or dimension. In the comics, the Void is a shapeless enтιтy that often chooses to take an anthropomorphic form. The Void has killed innumerable people using its darkness-based power in the source material, but the MCU might take a different approach to its abilities. Like Dormammu and the snap of an Infinity Gauntlet, the MCU’s Void could be a dimension of its own. And similarly to Dormmamu’s Dark Dimension, anybody could escape the Void using wits instead of sheer force.
Thunderbolts*’ Final Trailer Suggests Yelena Will Be The One Who Will Defeat Sentry & The Void
Yelena Might Be Able To Defeat The Void By Coming To Terms With Her Past
In the final Thunderbolts* trailer, Yelena Belova willingly enters the Void during the final battle, to her teammates’ displeasure. This sH๏τ probably comes before the sH๏τs where Yelena meets past versions of herself, which may take place inside the Void. Taking into account the idea that the Void isn’t defeated through sheer force, the Thunderbolts may attempt to stop Sentry and his dark alter ego from attacking New York, only to realize that they can’t punch their way out of it. Yelena might sacrifice herself by entering the Void itself and defeat it from within.
The final Thunderbolts* trailer puts special focus on Yelena Belova from the beginning, with Red Guardian telling her, “being the hero, there is no higher calling.” Yelena voices her frustration with all the regrets she has collected over her life as a Black Widow, and she seemingly offers herself to the Void when she realizes that the Void can’t be stopped with traditional methods. Most of the Thunderbolts will return in Avengers: Doomsday, including Sentry, so it’s almost a given that Yelena’s plan will work, and both Yelena and Robert Reynolds will survive the events of Thunderbolts*.
How Yelena Belova Could Defeat Sentry & The Void In Thunderbolts*
Yelena Belova’s Weapon Against Sentry And The Void May Be Thunderbolts*’ Main Theme
If the Void doesn’t actually kill its victims, then it might be a pocket dimension where people are tormented by their darkest memories and fears. To come out of the Void, Yelena might come to terms with her past, and she can help the Void’s victims do the same to escape. The sH๏τs from the final Thunderbolts* trailer where Yelena runs into a child version of herself may be part of her personal trial to exit and defeat the Void. This theory is supported by Thunderbolts*‘ official synopsis, which reads:
After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
By overcoming her fears and regrets, Yelena Belova may be able to become untouchable by the Void. After achieving this, Yelena might be able to save the Void’s victims and retrieve Robert Reynolds out, as well. In the comics, Robert Reynolds repeatedly manages to control his Void alter ego and use his Sentry persona for good. This could be the case at the end of Thunderbolts*, and Robert Reynolds could side with the Thunderbolts and the Avengers to fight Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday without the risk of reawakening the Void.
