I’m Convinced The MCU’s Next Avengers Movies Could Redeem The Hero From A $100 Million Marvel Box Office Bomb

The next Avengers movies will be the most ambitious entries the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen, and they appear as the best possible projects to redeem the hero from a major box office bomb. The MCU’s Avengers movies are the most important in the franchise. While they started with a focus on a relatively small team of heroes, by the end of the Infinity Saga, the “Avengers” brand became synonymous with franchise-wide events. That meaning will carry over to Avengers: Doomsday‘s story, as the announced cast for the film features many non-Avengers characters.

While Avengers: Secret Wars‘ cast is still at least a year away from being revealed, the movie is expected to be the most ambitious yet for the MCU. It could allow Marvel to pull from its entire live-action history, which means bringing in heroes and villains from other franchises besides the expected MCU stars. While the Marvel brand has become extremely successful, some movies based on Marvel characters, both in the MCU and in other franchises, have failed at the box office. However, the Multiverse Saga’s Avengers movies offer those projects a chance for redemption, which one hero desperately needs.

The MCU’s Next Avengers Movies Will Use At Least One Other Franchise

The X-Men Are Finally Coming To The MCU

As was the case for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, it was always expected that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars would pull characters from all over the MCU. With the multiverse as the driving force of the plot, that means Marvel could use both characters currently in the franchise and those who have already died or retired. However, the multiverse can be used in another potentially more exciting way, which is to bring in players from other live-action Marvel franchises into the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday‘s announced cast confirmed that is the MCU’s plan.

While the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and more MCU teams have been confirmed for the next Avengers movie, the most interesting addition to the cast of Doomsday came from a different franchise. Marvel has revealed that multiple stars from Fox’s original X-Men movie franchise will be back for the upcoming Avengers film. While Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is suspiciously missing, many Fox X-Men actors were announced for their MCU debuts/returns, including James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).

With several actors from Fox’s original X-Men franchise confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday and announced even before the movie went into production, it seems like the mutants will play a big role in the next Avengers movie. The Marvels‘ post-credits scene featured an X-Men universe, with Grammer’s Beast checking on Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau after she crashed into their universe. As the Multiverse Saga has revealed that multiversal travels can lead to incursions, it is likely that this X-Men universe will crash with Earth-616, the MCU’s Earth. The Fox X-Men’s role opens the door for other Marvel franchises to be used.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Would Make Sense For An Avengers Movie Crossover

The Multiverse Saga Has Already Connected Both Franchises

Fox’s X-Men franchise might not be the only non-MCU universe that makes its way into Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. After all, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has already been connected to the Marvel Studios franchise through the multiverse. Tom Hardy’s Venom was taken to the MCU at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, returning to the SSU in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While he was sent back before he could interact with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man or any MCU heroes, a piece of the Venom symbiote was left behind. Additionally, symbiotes have been rumored for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Besides the story setup for Holland’s Spider-Man to come into contact with the Venom symbiote and don the black suit — Peter first put on the symbiote Spider-Man suit in the comics’ Secret Wars — multiple SSU actors have talked about how they want to cross over with the MCU. Hardy has been vocal about wanting to see Venom and Spider-Man fight, which he thinks his kids would love. Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson would also be game to adapt “Kraven’s Last Hunt.” Since the MCU and the SSU have already crossed over, they could easily do it again.

The Avengers Movies Have The Perfect Way Of Redeeming The SSU’s $100 Million Box Office Bomb

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Has Multiple Divisive Releases

The MCU’s upcoming Avengers movies do not have to only use heroes from films that worked, as they can take characters from projects that struggled at the box office and have them live up to their potential. Marvel has done so before, with Jennifer Garner’s Elektra return in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine being a recent case. Madame Web turned into a box office bomb, grossing $100.5 million (via Box Office Mojo) against a reported budget in the $100 million range. With that budget and the movie’s marketing expenses, Madame Web lost Sony more than $100 million, which is a significant sum.

Despite Madame Web‘s failure, Dakota Johnson’s Cᴀssandra Webb could be redeemed in the MCU’s Avengers movies. Living up to her comic book role, the character, who turned more or less into her comic book-accurate self at the end of Madame Web, could use the Web of Life and Destiny that allows multiversal travel to have SSU players like Venom, as well as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, enter the MCU. If Madame Web returned in a project with good writing and had a key role alongside fan favorites like the Spider-Men, the MCU could redeem Johnson’s character.

Madame Web Could Also Be Redeemed By The MCU In Another Exciting Way

The SSU Movie Teased A Sequel That Will Never Come

Cᴀssandra Webb with the Spider-Women in Madame Web

The most exciting part of Madame Web‘s trailers was the teases of the three Spider-Women and Johnson’s тιтle character donning their comic book costumes. However, the SSU film revealed they were only visions of the future, with Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor’s Marvel characters never becoming their superhero selves in the movie. That was the biggest disappointment in a film that had very few elements that worked. However, it opens the door for the MCU’s upcoming Avengers movies to redeem Madame Web in a huge way by allowing the Spider-Women to live up to their potential.

Having [Sydney] Sweeney, who has been requested to join the MCU for quite some time, and the rest of the Spider-Women team up with Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men…

If Madame Web were to return with full control of the Web of Life and Destiny to the point of being able to travel the multiverse and pull characters from there, then some time would have pᴀssed, which could lead to the Spider-Women having already turned into heroes. Having Sweeney, who has been requested to join the MCU for quite some time, and the rest of the Spider-Women team up with Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men would give the MCU’s Avengers a unique storyline rooted in the Spider-Man universe, ensuring that Madame Web‘s characters are redeemed.
