Fast & Furious’ Forgotten Spinoff Shows How The $7.3 Billion Franchise Can Continue After Fast 11 Wraps Up The Saga

Despite becoming one of the highest-grossing movie franchises of all time, Fast & Furious‘ main story is finally coming to an end with Fast 11, but its forgotten spinoff show proves that the series could continue for years to come. Having debuted back in 2001, The Fast and the Furious became a big financial hit that was appreciated by fans, but no one could have anticipated quite how influential it would become. Since its first outing, F&F has accumulated over $7 billion at the box office and produced 11 films, with many of Fast & Furious‘ best movies exceeding expectations.

Fast Five was among the best action movies of the 2010s and completely changed the direction of the franchise, while Furious 7 became its biggest financial hit and continued the series’ positive trajectory. The IP has even made its way into Universal theme parks as a major attraction, highlighting just how global it has become. Therefore, the decision to end its main story with the next film does seem surprising despite a slight decline in recent years, but Fast & Furious Spy Racers may be proof that the narrative could continue even after the main saga concludes.

Spy Racers Is A Show About A New Generation Of Fast & Furious Characters Taking Over

Fast & Furious Has Already Given A Platform To A Younger Group Of Drivers

While Fast & Furious has made a mᴀssive impression theatrically, many people may be unaware of its Netflix spinoff show, Spy Racers. The animated series was targeted towards a young demographic, as it focused on a group of teenagers facing off against one of the franchise’s evil organizations. Impressively, Spy Racers was able to produce six seasons in less than two years, giving its vibrant cast of characters plenty of opportunities to shine. More importantly, the spinoff project put the spotlight on a younger generation, with Dom’s cousin, Tony Toretto, leading the group of plucky racers.

You may have already thought the action series was ridiculous after seeing cars launch into space and drive from skyscraper to skyscraper, but Fast & Furious Spy Racers took the franchise to wacky new heights. Its ambitious plotlines embrace the over-the-top nature of Fast & Furious, which feels even more fitting with younger characters. Watching Tony’s crew use cloaking tech and equip their vehicles with parachutes is exactly what makes the F&F saga so much fun, and even if these characters don’t have a future on the big screen, they may have paved the way for a new generation.

Fast & Furious 12 Should Be A Soft Reboot With New Characters (Just Not The Ones From Spy Racers)

Spy Racers Is A Sign That The Franchise Could Opt To Continue Without Fast & Furious’ Main Cast

While Tony is unlikely to replace Dominic Toretto after Fast 11, it doesn’t mean the story can’t undergo a reboot to make way for new characters. There has already been talk of an all-female Fast & Furious spinoff alongside a Hobbs solo movie being greenlit, proving the final chapter isn’t really the end. However, keeping the franchise alive solely through spinoffs won’t be easy, and having some sort of reboot with new heroes feels like the best way forward. Dom’s son could lead the next crew, but that would require a large time jump, subsequently jeopardizing any ongoing spinoffs.

Focusing on a new group entirely that has no connections to Dom or the other main characters could be a bold but interesting strategy that breathes new life into the series.

Likewise, Tony and the Spy Racers crew are another option, but the show wasn’t nearly popular enough to justify them leading the next era of Fast & Furious. Therefore, focusing on a new group entirely that has no connections to Dom or the other main characters could be a bold but interesting strategy that breathes new life into the series. Alternatively, Fast & Furious 12 could keep some of the newer main characters, like Tess and Ramsey, potentially building a younger group through them to keep some continuity and idenтιтy while changing the direction of the saga.

Regardless of what decision the writers make, a Fast & Furious reboot feels inevitable to keep the series alive long-term, and Spy Racers is proof that focusing on a younger generation would be the ideal way to ensure the $7.3 billion franchise has a bright future.
