Mortal Kombat 2 Will Have A Lot Of Fights, But This Is The One I Really Want To See After 2021’s Scorpion Disappointment

I really hope Mortal Kombat 2 redeems the fight scenes between two specific characters after the 2021 film disappointed me. While most Mortal Kombat stories feature Liu Kang as the protagonist, the 2021 reboot film changed things up and instead focused on Cole Young, who is a brand-new character in the franchise. While Cole Young was the main character of the movie, the 2021 film actually begins with a fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, establishing the bitter rivalry between the two Mortal Kombat characters.

I think it was a good decision to start the reboot movie with a fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, since they are the two most popular Mortal Kombat characters. However, both of their fights in the 2021 film are unfortunately underwhelming. Since Scorpion and Sub-Zero are both returning in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2, their fight scenes need to be a lot better. Mortal Kombat 2 will undoubtedly feature a lot of action-packed fights, but it is essential for the sequel to get another rematch between Scorpion and Sub-Zero right.

I Need A Scorpion Vs. Sub-Zero Rematch In Mortal Kombat 2

Scorpion & Sub-Zero Are Both Returning In Mortal Kombat 2

While not many details about the origin of the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero are revealed in the 2021 film, it is established that they are from different clans. In Mortal Kombat lore, Scorpion is a Shirai Ryu ninja while Sub-Zero is a Lin Kuei ᴀssᴀssin. Since a member of the Lin Kuei left the clan to form the Shirai Ryu, the two clans were at war for years. However, Sub-Zero elevates his rivalry with Scorpion when he kills his family at the beginning of 2021’s Mortal Kombat.

While Sub-Zero also kills Scorpion during their first fight in the movie, the Shirai Ryu ninja rises up from the Netherrealm at the end of Mortal Kombat. Scorpion helps Cole Young defeat Sub-Zero, ensuring that Earthrealm warriors will be able to fight in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament. However, in addition to the Earthrealm warriors, it has been confirmed that Scorpion and Sub-Zero will also appear in Mortal Kombat 2. Therefore, it would be a missed opportunity if the two rivals don’t fight in the tournament.

Why Mortal Kombat 2’s Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero Fights Were So Disappointing

I Had High Hopes For Scorpion & Sub-Zero’s Fights In 2021’s Mortal Kombat

Even though there were already two fights between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the first movie, I’m still hoping that they will fight each other again in Mortal Kombat 2. Aside from them being two of the best characters in the franchise, this is also because their fights in the 2021 film were underwhelming. Both of the fights between Scorpion and Sub-Zero featured countless quick cuts and strange editing choices that reduced the intensity of the sequences.

Even though Cole Young is revealed to be a descendant of Scorpion, he is not a crucial part of the rivalry.

Furthermore, the climactic showdown wasn’t a true fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as Cole Young was also involved. Because of this, their second encounter in the film was actually a two on one. Even though Cole Young is revealed to be a descendant of Scorpion, he is not a crucial part of the rivalry and should not be involved in their fights. Therefore, even though it was great to see Scorpion get revenge against Sub-Zero at the end of the 2021 movie, I would like them to have another one-on-one fight in Mortal Kombat 2.

Sub-Zero May Not Actually Be Sub-Zero In Mortal Kombat 2

Sub-Zero May Return As Noob Saibot In Mortal Kombat 2

While many characters die in the 2021 film, it has been teased that several characters will be resurrected from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in Mortal Kombat 2. Characters being brought back from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ isn’t strange for the Mortal Kombat franchise, and it definitely won’t feel out of place in the upcoming sequel since the movie will include Quan Chi, a sorcerer who is capable of reviving people. Out of all the characters returning from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in Mortal Kombat 2, Sub-Zero is the most notable.

However, when he is brought back, Sub-Zero will likely be referred to as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 2. This is what he is referred to as after his revival in the video games. Instead of wearing Sub-Zero’s iconic blue costume, Noob Saibot will likely wear a black and gray outfit in the sequel, just as he does in the games. Regardless, while Noob Saibot is technically a new character, him fighting Scorpion would still count as a rematch between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 2.
