Despite being an entertaining thriller, Blumhouse’s Drop has many unanswered questions and headscratchers that make the story harder to believe. As a fan of the production company and director Christopher Landon, I was primed to enjoy Drop. In preparation for Screen Rant’s coverage, I watched the movie twice. The first time I walked out of the theater, I was quite pleased with the film, similar to critic Mae Abdulbaki’s opinion of Drop. The filmography is excellent, the film maintains the suspense, and the actors did a great job. Landon clearly took inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock, and it shows in the best ways.

That being said, the second time I watched the Blumhouse thriller, I focused less on the cinematographic and creative choices, examining the story from a more analytical perspective. Unfortunately, Drop is the kind of movie that seems fantastic at first but falls apart when thinking about the plot too hard. The film is riddled with nonstop plot holes, unanswered questions, and peculiar decisions from characters that become distracting once they’re noticed.

How Did Richard Bug The Entire Restaurant?

Richard’s Abilities Seem Unreasonable If He Doesn’t Have An Accomplice

Many parts of Drop only work if Richard can both see and hear everything that Violet is doing. He was able to see her writing the note in eyeliner in the bathroom and the note on the dollar bill to Phil, the piano player. Neither of those would be visible from his table. He could also hear Violet speaking at the table and in the bathroom, which was proven by the texts responding to her verbal statements.

However, the movie fails to answer the question of how he bugged the entire restaurant. The staff at Palate don’t react to Richard like they know him, so it doesn’t seem like he did it during a past visit. He’s not shown to have an accomplice who works there. This question ultimately gnawed at me hours after seeing Drop for the first time.

How Did Violet Fake Pouring The Poison Into The Tequila?

Richard Watches Violet Closely Enough That He Should’ve Seen The Fakeout

The entirety of Drop relies on the fact that the people threatening her are watching her so closely that they can see her every move. She can’t even go to the bathroom or write on a napkin without them knowing exactly what she’s doing. If this is true, then the question naturally comes up of how exactly she faked pouring the poison into Henry’s tequila sH๏τ.

They’re presumably watching her so closely that they can see whether liquid comes out of the vial. She doesn’t have another vial that she can fill with water to throw them off. Violet might have been able to act her way through the situation because of her past, but she couldn’t stop them from seeing whether she actually dumped out the poison.

How Did The Meter Reader Get Inside Violet’s House?

The Meter Reader Was Never Let Inside Violet’s House

The revelation at the end of Drop that the meter reader is the man holding Jen and Toby hostage is the most predictable part of the whole movie. However, after watching the movie for the second time, I noticed something that’s a bit of a headscratcher. Violet never lets the meter reader inside the house; instead, she tells him that he can go through the back gate. Jen also isn’t shown letting him inside the house at any point in time.

As such, it’s a question mark of how exactly he got inside the house. The idea of Violet leaving her doors unlocked seems strange, given how panicky she is about leaving Toby at all. Perhaps, she forgot to lock the backdoor. Alternatively, he could have used his job to convince Jen to let him in. Either way, I wish they had shown that rather than leaving it up to the viewers to speculate.

Who Is Richard’s Employer?

Richard’s Employer Remains A Mystery At The End Of Drop

When discussing the murder plan with Violet, Richard references “my employer” without ever telling the audience who he’s working for. This is an incredibly frustrating unanswered question because the details shape my perception of the entire movie.

If he’s working for the mayor’s office, then their knowledge of security cameras, bugging, and phone cloning seems odd. Yet, the ability to scrub the mayor’s server makes sense. Alternatively, if he’s working for an illegal enтιтy that’s a part of the embezzlement plot, the knowledge of surveillance makes more sense. Yet, it raises other questions about how they’re connected and why. Either way, I want to know more about this conspiracy, who’s involved, and how they set up the events of Drop. There’s just too much unresolved mystery.

How Did The Conspirators Manipulate Violet Into Going On A Date With Henry?

The Movie Doesn’t Explain How Far Back The Murder Plot Started

Richard makes it very clear during his conversation with Violet later in the movie that they needed her to kill Henry because of her late husband’s death. While this answers one question – why her – it also raises a much bigger question about how they manipulated the situation. The conspirators relied on a lot of coincidences and question marks for their plan to work.

They needed the two to match on a dating app. They somehow had to manipulate both parties into liking each other enough to want a date. They had to force them into going on a date on a specific day, time, and location since they had to bug the place. The situation seems entirely too precarious to work out exactly as planned.

How Did Richard Clone Violet’s Phone?

The Technology In Drop Is Accurate At Times And Inexplicable In Other Moments

No matter which direction I go with this, I fall back on the question of how Richard cloned Violet’s phone and when he cloned it. It seems like he and his employers would’ve needed the phone cloned for quite a long time in order to track the relationship between Violet and Henry, know when and where the date was happening, etc. Perhaps they bribed someone at the phone company. They certainly have the money to do that, given the embezzlement scam. However, without direct confirmation on this detail, the phone cloning in Drop seems silly.

Why Didn’t Henry Have Another Backup For His PH๏τos?

Henry Seems Like A Smart Enough Character To Back Up His PH๏τos

In Drop, Henry works as an informant for the FBI, providing them with pH๏τos of evidence of the Chicago mayor’s crimes. However, Richard forces Violet to smash the SD card, and he tells her that they scrubbed the backup from the Mayor’s office. The idea that Henry didn’t make another backup separate from that makes no sense, though.

He knows that his pH๏τos back up to the mayor’s office, and the mayor is the person committing the crimes. Henry’s decision to not have a second backup of his own is a headscratcher. This isn’t necessarily a plot hole or an unanswered question caused by the movie, but it certainly is a questionable choice on the decision of Henry.

Who Helped Richard Kill Phil?

The $20 Dollar Bill Couldn’t Have Gotten In Violet’s Food If Richard Worked Alone

No feasible way exists that Richard could have done all these things and evaded detection without help, so it leaves me wondering who helped him kill Phil and taunt Violet in Drop. The face of the person dumping the poison in the martini is obscured, so perhaps one of the other restaurant workers was helping him.

Why Did Henry Stay On The Date?

One of the most unbelievable parts of Drop is the fact that Henry stays on the horrible date long enough for the murder plot to happen. Violet’s phone is vibrating nonstop, and she’s barely paying any attention to anything Henry’s saying. She behaves in suspicious ways. Her behavior is strange enough for both the waiter and bartender to worry about her.

Henry said he only waited three months for their first date because of the fact that he thought she was genuine, but she didn’t behave remotely genuine after she started getting the drops. The fact that he doesn’t leave the minute he finds her watch is too much to believe. I can excuse many other peculiar character choices in Drop, but this one requires too much suspension of disbelief, even for me.
