Until Dawn Movie’s Only Returning Character From The Video Game Addressed By Writer

As speculation continues to build about their ties, Gary Dauberman has shared a little insight about the Until Dawn movie’s returning game character. Though based on Supermᴀssive Games’ horror hit of the same name, the upcoming film is set in the same universe, centering on a group of friends caught in a time loop while searching for one of their missing sisters, tormented by something new each night. Among Until Dawn‘s cast is Peter Stormare, who previously played the ominous Dr. Hill in the game and is expected to play a new character.

Now, however, during a Reddit Ask Me Anything, Dauberman has confirmed Stormare is playing the same character in Until Dawn. The co-writer stopped short of sharing too many details at the risk of spoiling the film, but he did ᴀssure that the character’s role “is just as crucial as it was in the game“. Check out Dauberman’s response below:

What Hill’s Return Means For The Until Dawn Movie

He Could Be The Key To Further Game Connections

Beyond just the prior reports saying he wouldn’t be the same character, Hill’s actual role in the original Until Dawn game makes his movie return somewhat surprising. In Supermᴀssive’s 2015 hit, Dr. Hill was revealed to not be a real character, but instead a figure of Josh’s grief-driven imagination after the disappearance of his sisters. The 2024 Until Dawn remake’s ending, however, did make a change to the character that saw Hayden Panettiere’s Sam now also seemingly encountering him in her imagination after discovering a scar on her arm that endlessly bleeds.

With Hill having previously been teased as being the main connection between the game and movie, Dauberman’s confirmation that it’s the same character all but confirms the Until Dawn movie will feature more direct references to the game. Director David F. Sandberg did recently confirm the movie is intended to be a sequel to the game that can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the source material. Even still, though, the team have indicated to have been in the know about the remake when making the film, thus creating the possibility of incorporating its ending into their story.

The other possibility for Hill’s return in the Until Dawn movie is he’s tracking the Wendigo curse that was a big part of the first game’s story. The trailer has already confirmed the supernatural creature will be back to terrify the new cast in some way, and since the previously knowledgeable character of Larry Fessenden’s Stranger was killed by one in the game, Stormare’s character can pop up to try and help out the young cast from either their Wendigo fight or general situation.

Our Take On Hill’s Confirmed Until Dawn Return

Hopefully It Leads To More

As much as I love the standalone nature of the original game, I can’t deny I’ve always wanted a sequel, so for the Until Dawn movie to essentially fill that void with Stormare returning as Hill is an exciting update. Part of me also hopes that his return leads to further expansions of the world, be it a new game or sequel to the film, should it perform well. Plus, when it comes to sinister or ominous characters, Stormare always delights.
