Harry Potter star Tom Felton reacts to the ongoing Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger fan shipping. The film franchise, based on the popular J.K. Rowling novels, centered primarily on Harry and his fight against Voldemort, but developed character arcs for several wizarding students at Hogwarts. Among them were Draco (portrayed by Felton), a rival of Harry whose family served Voldermort, and the headstrong Hermione (Emma Watson). Despite Hermione already having a romantic interest, and never getting along with Draco, fans have shipped them together for a while.
Speaking with Jake Hamilton on Jake’s Takes, Felton reacted to all the Draco and Hermione shipping. He explained that he was made aware of them “through conventions and fan groups,” and noted that he considers any Harry Potter creative endeavor to be “a positive thing.” Felton then shared his knowledge of different ships, including Draco and Harry, and Draco and an apple. When it comes to Draco and Hermione, he is not necessarily indulging in the idea, but says “it’s amazing.” Read Felton’s comments below:
We’ve not read any of it. It’s not particularly our cup of tea I should say. But, it’s amazing that people are using these characters to create their own stories, even if it is Draco with an apple.
What This Means For Harry Potter
Draco & Hermione Would Not Have Worked
Any potential romance between Draco and Hermione has been fan-generated, since the movies and source material never explored that dynamic. One of the main and only romantic storylines in Harry Potter is that of Hermione and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and it develops gradually throughout the franchise. Beginning as friends, Hermione and Ron express feelings towards each other amid the Yule Ball and when Ron momentarily dates Lavender. Their eventual kiss was a long time coming for many audiences, and during Deathly Hallows: Part 2, it was revealed that they have a future family.
Another reason why Draco and Hermione would not have worked is because of how he treated her and many other characters. Draco often looked down on Hermione because her parents were not wizards and targeted Harry constantly in earlier movies. Him causing the Hippogriff to be executed and then bragging about it in Prisoner of Azkaban even led Hermione to punch him, in one notable fan-favorite moment from the franchise. As the films continue, Draco showed a bit more humanity, but his proclivity to side with evil makes any romance hard to imagine.
Our Take On Draco & Hermione Fan Shipping
Hermione And Ron Make A Better Pair
Draco and Hermione may remain a popular Harry Potter fan relationship, but there are likely better options for Hermione, if not Ron. Had they never ended up together, fans have also vocally advocated for Harry as a possible love interest. Given everything the characters endured throughout each film, though, many audiences enjoyed seeing the relationship blossom between Hermione and Ron, and were ecstatic when they finally kissed.
