“He Changed My Life:” Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler Reveals He & Michael B. Jordan Still Draw Inspiration From Chadwick Boseman

Director Ryan Coogler expresses his admiration for the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman and explains how he still honors the actor’s memory. Chadwick Boseman played T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame — all within the span of three years. Even though Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther tenure only lasted three years, his influence on Marvel, comic book movies, and pop culture as a whole is unparalleled.

On The Breakfast Show, Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler looks back fondly on Chadwick Boseman’s qualities as an actor and a person. Coogler describes Boseman as “the kind of teacher who you never knew you was getting a lesson when he taught,” and praises the late actor’s patience, timeliness, and his discipline to “never [break] action.” Read Ryan Coogler’s full quote below:

“He changed my life. He was the kind of teacher who you never knew you was getting a lesson when he taught. It was all by example, and what he gave me and Michael was patience. He moved at an old-school pace, and he took his time. He was always early. He was that type of dude. And Mike will tell you this, I told him, man, I said, ‘Hey bro, what would Chad do in this role? If he had this role, what would he do?’ Because Chad never broke action.”

Ryan Coogler also recalls witnessing Chadwick Boseman talk to Disney execs in his Wakandan accent, which surprised them. According to Coogler, Boseman never “turned off” the accent “until the wrap.” Coogler says:

“He was talking in an African accent. Disney execs came to see us on Panther. It was week two, and they pulled up, and it was the T’Challa accent, and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap.”

What Ryan Coogler’s Chadwick Boseman Comments Mean For Black Panther

Chadwick Boseman Is An Irreplaceable Actor

Chadwick Boseman is admired by all of his co-stars, colleagues, and collaborators, Marvel and otherwise. The impact of Boseman’s Black Panther performance across four movies and three years is patent on the screen, and Coogler’s comments only emphasize how much it depended on Chadwick Boseman’s dedication. Six years after Chadwick Boseman’s final MCU appearance and a few years ahead of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3, Boseman’s qualities are still a beacon of inspiration.

Marvel Studios’ decision not to recast T’Challa after Chadwick Boseman’s pᴀssing was a difficult one, but it has allowed Boseman’s legacy to remain intact, at least until a franchise reboot potentially wipes the slate clean for every character. As of Ryan Coogler’s latest comments, the void left behind by Chadwick Boseman in the MCU is still felt by audiences and creatives alike. With T’Challa still absent in the MCU, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever paid homage to Chadwick Boseman and his T’Challa portrayal, and Black Panther 3 will probably honor the late actor in a similar way.

Chadwick Boseman And His T’Challa Portrayal Continue To Be Missed

Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa in Black Panther 2018

Chadwick Boseman’s absence will be felt deeply in Phase 6’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, especially if Black Panther 3 releases close to them. Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther had the undeniable potential to be face of the MCU after Avengers: Endgame, and he would have been a major player in crossover events. In his absence, Leтιтia Wright and Winston Duke will represent the MCU’s Wakanda in Avengers: Doomsday.
