The studio behind Netflix’s Adolescence will remake one of the most horrifying nuclear apocalypse movies of all time. Co-created by Jack Thorne and directed by Boiling Point‘s Philip Barantini, Netflix’s hit miniseries follows a 13-year-old boy who is arrested for the murder of a classmate, with each episode sH๏τ in one continuous take and Adolescence‘s cast including Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye Marsay, and Owen Cooper. The series has been a mᴀssive critical and commercial success, holding a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score and smashing multiple viewing records for Netflix.
Now, the studio behind Netflix’s hit series has found its next project, per the BBC. Warp Films, one of the production companies behind Adolescence, will develop the 1984 film Threads into a TV series. A spokesperson for Warp described the original movie as “groundbreaking” and said, “This adaptation will explore prescient issues through rich, character-driven storytelling.” Warp founder and chief executive Mark Herbert told Radio Times:
Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people. This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences.
What A Threads Remake Means
Why Is The Original Movie So Horrifying?
The 1984 film Threads follows two families in Sheffield, England (where Warp Films is based) during the aftermath of a nuclear attack on the city. Directed by documentary filmmaker Mick Jackson and produced on a small budget, the movie provides a bleak but vivid portrayal of post-apocalyptic life, and is often cited as one of the most terrifying nuclear war movies ever made that most accurately captures the sheer horror of nuclear war and its aftermath, along with the devastating effects such an event would have on human civilization.
Threads was released during the Cold War when nuclear conflict seemed like a real possibility, which only made the movie more terrifying for audiences. Since the serious threat of nuclear war has waned over the years, a remake may play differently for modern audiences, though its downright horrifying portrayal of a nuclear apocalypse should still have a profound effect on audiences. While the original movie has a significant cult following, the remake could become more of a mainstream success on the level of Netflix’s Adolescence.
Our Take On The Threads Remake
It’s A Tall Order
Since Threads is highly regarded for its realistic and terrifying portrayal of a nuclear apocalypse, and is filled with images that have remained seared into the collective consciousness of its viewers, it may be difficult for a television remake to recapture this effectively. However, it may benefit the remake that the original movie is more of a cult favorite that never really caught on with mainstream audiences. In turn, the Threads remake may present itself as completely new to modern audiences, unencumbered by the lofty expectations of the original movie.
