Minecraft 2 Update Teases New Protagonist For Movie Sequel

Director Jared Hess gives a promising update on a potential sequel to A Minecraft Movie. The 2025 video game adaptation film takes on the popular sandbox game franchise Minecraft. After being in development hell for years, the movie was released on April 4, 2025. Set in the classic block-built universe, the movie follows the story of four misfits who are pulled through a mysterious portal and embark on an imagination-filled quest as they work to find their way back home. A Minecraft Movie features a leading cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Speaking with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Hess addresses the possibility of A Minecraft Movie sequel. Hess notes that “there were so many things that [they] didn’t tap into that [they] wanted to” for A Minecraft Movie. He reveals that “it seems like there’s already talk about it happening,” keeping him excited about what is to come. He even clarified that the character teased in the ending of this first movie was Alex, who would be a prominent character in a sequel film if it were to happen. Check out the full quote from Hess below:

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline: They aren’t going to let you off so easy with the Minecraft sequel, not when the first put up such big numbers. Take me through that process and your desire to be part of it?

Hess: Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline: Who’s the new character driving the next Minecraft?

Hess: The character we teased is Alex, the other mᴀssively critical character in Minecraft. It’s Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.

What This Means For The Minecraft Movie Franchise

The Movie Is Doing Very Well In Theaters

Hess’ interview comes after A Minecraft Movie had an incredibly positive performance during its opening weekend. The film opened to a mᴀssive $162.7 million this past weekend, making it the highest-grossing debut for a video game adaptation. Its worldwide total currently sits at $313.4 million, and it still has time to top this already impressive haul. This overperformance makes all signs point to a sequel for A Minecraft Movie.

As Hess references in his quote, the ending of A Minecraft Movie already leaves room for a second movie. While the movie did not feature a cliffhanger ending, its final moments feature the back of a character’s head, which is heavily implied, and now confirmed, to be Alex from the video games. Introducing this character could be a jumping off point for A Minecraft Movie 2. The sequel would further be aided by Hess’s enthusiasm towards the project, as he says it is “such an expansive world in the game.”

Our Take On The A Minecraft Movie Sequel Talk

It Has Done Well Despite Negative Reviews

If one thing is clear from A Minecraft Movie‘s monetary success, it’s that these huge IP movies do not have to be great to do well. A Minecraft Movies reviews are thoroughly mixed, with the film holding a 48% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki was one of the film’s detractors, giving the movie 4 out of 10 stars and noting that “A Minecraft Movie’s characters are paper-thin.” Nonetheless, this will not stop the meme-filled movie from doing well among audiences, leading to a fairly inevitable second film.
