The Marvel Cinematic Universe has not always followed the comics faithfully, but new casting details of Avengers: Doomsday have set up the perfect replacement for one of the most important characters from the source material. With so many confirmed characters cast in Doomsday, it is notable that several characters from the comic story, such as the Beyonder, have not yet been added to the film. With limited runtime, additional major characters being added to the cast seems unlikely, creating the need to use pre-existing characters to fulfill their roles instead.
The way the multiverse works in the MCU seems to have changed from one film to another. Between Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and every project in between, there have been different MCU multiverse terms used. However, consistent rules of the multiverse finally seem to be coming together with the presence of the TVA in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, and its connections and terms may give several hints about where the Multiverse Saga is going.
Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Announcements Have Confirmed Loki Is A Part Of The Fifth Avengers Movie
Loki Was Last Seen At The End Of His Own Series
The cast for Avengers: Doomsday primarily includes characters from several different teams, making the confirmation of Tom Hiddleston returning to the role of Loki comparatively all the more notable. The ending of Loki series saw the Temporal Loom becoming destabilized. This would have been a major problem for the TVA and for Marvel’s multiverse, growing out of control and likely destroying itself in the end. To avoid this event, Loki gave up his own life and took the place of the Temporal Loom in the Loki season 2 ending.
In doing so, Loki was given incredible power and connection to the multiverse. However, it also seemingly left him stuck in one place. His body appears to be the only thing that is keeping the multiverse from branching out in every direction, potentially meaning that he cannot leave his spot for eternity. How this might play into the story of Avengers: Doomsday remains to be seen – however, there are several theories that make sense, especially when considering how the Secret Wars event took place in the 2015 comics.
Loki’s Confirmed Role In Avengers: Doomsday Makes A Wide Range Of Major MCU Theories Seem More Possible Than Ever
Various Roles In The Secret Wars Story Make Sense For Loki
There are many roles that Loki could fulfill in the MCU. Much of what Doctor Doom does in the comics actually resembles the ending of Loki, with similar images of God Emperor Doom on his throne sharing similarities with Loki as the new Temporal Loom. There are story details that the Beyonders play into as well, in setting up conditions to cull the multiverse, that Loki could fulfill here. However, the use of Molecule Man in the comics might be the most suitable role for Loki to play in the Doomsday story.
In the comics, Molecule Man has a confusing and complex relationship with the Beyonders and with Battleworld. He is created by the Beyonders in each universe as a form akin to Anchor Beings in the MCU, although his abilities wind up being used to overthrow them. He takes their power, and helps Doctor Doom to build Battleworld. In the end, he even helps to give power to Reed Richards, bringing about the end of the story. This outsized, powerful role could make sense for Loki in the MCU.
Loki is going to be in Avengers: Doomsday, and the character’s return to the franchise is as exciting as it is confusing. Things in the Multiverse Saga have grown enormous and complex, and having familiar, anchoring characters like Loki to help make sense of it would be a great path forward. How the events of the Secret Wars comic are adapted remains to be seen, but there are actually several characters from the comics that Loki could fulfill the role of in the MCU, and it will be interesting to see which ones he is selected for.
