Eddington First Image: Joaquin Phoenix & Pedro Pascal Get Confrontational In Ari Aster’s New A24 Movie

The first image from Eddington reveals Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal getting confrontational in Ari Aster’s new A24 movie. Aster is the writer and director behind the A24 horror movies Hereditary and Midsommar, which rank among the indie studio’s most acclaimed and highest-grossing тιтles. Aster’s latest film was 2023’s Beau Is Afraid, also for A24, which starred Phoenix as the тιтular character. Aster’s upcoming film Eddington reteams him with Phoenix and also includes Pascal among its star-studded cast.

Now, the first image from Eddington has been revealed via Pedro Pascal’s Instagram, showing he and Phoenix’s characters in a confrontation. The image shows off the film’s Western setting in a small town in New Mexico as Phoenix’s sheriff – replete with a gun, badge, and cowboy hat – raises his hand in an attempt to calm down Pascal’s character, who is pointing at and appears to be confronting him. The image was released as part of the announcement that Eddington will be premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Check out the image below:

What The Eddington Image Means For The Movie

What Is It About?

The first image from Eddington only features two members of its unbelievably star-studded cast, which also includes two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone, Oscar nominee Austin Butler, Yellowstone‘s Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., and more. However, the fact that the first image only features Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal could suggest that they are the film’s leads, with the latter reportedly playing the town’s mayor. Stone and Butler could only appear in smaller roles, possibly as the couple stranded in the town.

Aster’s last movie, Beau Is Afraid, is best described as a surrealist tragicomedy about an anxiety-ridden man who embarks on a Kafkaesque odyssey back home for his mother’s funeral, and Eddington seems equally difficult to pin down. It’s been described as a contemporary Western that also blends elements of a black comedy and reportedly follows a couple stranded in a seemingly welcoming New Mexico town, which takes a sinister turn by nightfall. Phoenix’s sheriff is said to have higher aspirations with his sights set on the mayor’s office, which could be the reason for their rivalry.

Our Take On Eddington Premiering At Cannes

It’s An Exciting Step-Up For Ari Aster

A teaser poster for Ari Aster's Eddington, featuring a clapperboard with some production details on rocky soil

Eddington will be Ari Aster’s first movie to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which should be an exciting step-up for the director as he competes for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Based on everything that’s known so far, Eddington is already shaping up to be one of Aster’s most enigmatic movies yet, right alongside Beau Is Afraid, which could play very well with a Cannes audience. However, whether Eddington connects with general audiences, or becomes a box-office bomb like Beau Is Afraid, remains to be seen.

Eddington still doesn’t have a theatrical release date.
