A new image has been released from Highest 2 Lowest
, unveiling Denzel Washington in the upcoming Spike Lee movie. Lee’s crime thriller serves as a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low (1963), which tells the story of a shoe company executive who becomes the victim of an extortion scheme after his driver’s son is mistakenly kidnapped. Washington will seemingly be playing the lead in the film, with a supporting cast that includes A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Dean Winters, Ilfenesh Hadera, Ice Spice, and Michael Potts.
Variety now provides a new look at Highest 2 Lowest, showing Washington’s character riding the subway. The image accompanies confirmation that the movie will play out of compeтιтion at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, with Washington himself expected to attend. Check out the new image below:
Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux also teased what is to come from Lee’s take on High and Low, confirming that it will take place in New York City with Washington playing the character previously played in the original by actor Toshirô Mifune:
“It’s the story of a man at the height of his fortune: fate places him before a crucial choice that could call everything into question. Tokyo has become New York, the 1960s the present day, and Denzel Washington takes on the role of Toshirō Mifune in his own way. It is also a great film about family.”

The Movie’s Theatrical Release Approaches
The new image doesn’t reveal much about Highest 2 Lowest, but it is the second image to be released from the film. The first showed A$AP Rocky wearing what looks to be an orange prison jumpsuit, with the rapper reportedly playing a felon named Yung Thug, who will be a primary figure in the story. It remains unclear how actors like Wright and Winters will factor into the film and how closely Lee’s movie will stick to the characters and events in High and Low. The тιтle change could suggest that audiences are in store for some exciting deviations.
As of writing, Highest 2 Lowest doesn’t have a release date, but it is expected to bow this year. The A24 film will get a run in theaters before eventually landing on Apple TV+. The fact that the movie is premiering at Cannes doesn’t really narrow the window down, but it could potentially release this summer or fall. With a Cannes premiere now confirmed, reviews and first reactions for Highest 2 Lowest should be making their way online in May, giving audiences a better idea of what to expect from the crime thriller.
Highest 2 Lowest will mark the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington after Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998), and Inside Man (2006).
Our Take On The New Highest 2 Lowest Image
The Spike Lee Film Already Looks Promising
After their previous collaborations, any movie that features the combined talents of Lee and Washington is one to look forward to. High and Low remains one of the best Kurosawa movies, and it will be interesting to see how Lee reimagines the story in his signature style. After Washington’s turn as part of the cast of Gladiator 2, it’s refreshing to see him back in the modern day and sporting a more laid-back style.
Lee’s previous movie, Da 5 Bloods (2020), earned glowing reviews from critics, which only makes anticipation for Highest 2 Lowest even higher. Washington, too, remains one of the most celebrated and respected actors working in Hollywood, and he can usually elevate any project that he is in. With a Cannes premiere now only a month or so away, it hopefully won’t be long before an official trailer for Highest 2 Lowest is released, giving a proper look at the film.
