At a preview event for Andor season 2, showrunner Tony Gilroy mentioned the potential dark future of Star Wars by addressing an upcoming horror project. As press for Andor season 2 has gone on, Gilroy has mentioned that he has greatly valued the freedom Lucasfilm has allowed him in crafting Andor‘s story, making it uniquely mature and grounded in a way other Star Wars movies and TV shows aren’t. Along these lines, he somewhat jokingly shared hopes that Andor could be setup for both Star Wars sitcoms and horror.
Gilroy was thus asked by Business Insider what he would do with a Star Wars horror project, to which Gilroy responded with a rather surprising “They’re doing that.“ He goes on to clarify a bit more by adding, “I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.” It would seem, then, that Star Wars has a horror project in development currently, though further details about this mystery project are, obviously, nonexistent at the moment.
What A Horror Project Means For Star Wars
They’re Treading New Ground
Horror is a genre that Star Wars fans have been wanting the franchise to explore for quite some time now. The closest the franchise has come to this on-screen is The Acolyte episode 5 “Night,” in which Manny Jacinto’s menacing Sith Lord, The Stranger, slaughters nearly an entire group of Jedi with little to no trouble at all – though Darth Vader’s famous hallway scene from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is also a strong contender.
These moments, however, are just small dips into the greater world of the horror genre, and it would be huge if Star Wars truly did have a pure horror project in development. It’s very unlike anything the franchise has ever pursued before, as George Lucas famously kept his movies family-friendly, and Disney’s Star Wars has followed in his footsteps with the sequel trilogy and TV shows like The Mandalorian. This horror project would be a risk well taken for the franchise.
What Kind Of Horror Project Would Star Wars Pursue?
The Dark Side Of The Force, Terrifying Creatures, & More
What comes next is speculation about what kind of horror project Star Wars could be pursuing, and there seem to be a few obvious avenues they could take. It’s hard to say whether they would want to pursue something like this in a movie or TV show, but it’s much easier to reason out who they would focus on. Any dark side Force user would make for a perfect focus in a Star Wars horror project, as there are still some haunting mysteries of the dark side we haven’t even seen yet.
Many fans have long since been asking for a Darth Vader-centric horror story, although the recent announcement of a Darth Vader novel seems to make that more difficult, if that chilling story is being told somewhere else. Given the endless reaches of the mᴀssive Star Wars galaxy, there are also so many things this horror project could focus on outside the Force, too. From creepy creatures to haunting planets, Star Wars has plenty of unique opportunities for exploration in a horror project.
