If This James Bond 26 Director Rumor Comes True, I’ll 100% Change My Mind About 007’s Amazon Future

Many were nervous about Bond 26 (including myself) after the Broccoli family sold James Bond to Amazon, but rumors circulating about the movie’s director should ease everyone’s worries. In February 2025, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reported that Amazon MGM Studios had paid around $1 billion to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to take over creative control of the James Bond franchise. Amazon previously purchased MGM Studios for $8.5 billion to obtain access to the franchise. However, that didn’t allot the company creative oversight of James Bond projects.

After paying another $1 billion for the IP, Amazon now has full control over James Bond movies and any other form of entertainment the company sees fit. They want to turn the franchise into a universe akin to Marvel Studios’ MCU or Star Wars. As a result, Bond 26 lies in the hands of Amazon, which is quite scary for those invested in this film series. Thankfully, a renowned, reliable filmmaker appears to be stepping up to the plate to direct the 26th James Bond movie.

Alfonso Cuarón Would Be An Incredible Choice For James Bond 26

Cuarón Is Reportedly In Talks To Direct The Next Bond Film

Alfonso Cuarón

If there was any director that could ease fans’ worries about Bond 26, it’s Alfonso Cuarón. According to X user @Simon___Robert, an editor and film distributor, Cuarón teased his involvement in the upcoming James Bond film during an appearance at Paris Cinéma Club in April 2025. Even though Cuarón didn’t mention the franchise’s name, he referred to it and, in a translated quote from French to English, said:

“There is indeed THIS project under discussion, and I have the desire — if it happens — to revisit this story in my own way.”

Amazon hasn’t confirmed Cuarón as the next director of the James Bond movie, but his comments suggest he is in talks with the company to helm Bond 26. Many should be thrilled by this news because Cuarón is a celebrated, remarkable filmmaker. He has won four Oscars over 11 nominations, including two Best Director awards for Gravity in 2014 and Roma in 2019. His other two wins were Best Film Editing for Gravity and Best Cinematography for Roma. Cuarón is simply a phenomenal director. His track record proves this, making him the best person to be Bond 26‘s director.

Alfonso Cuarón Already Transformed One Iconic UK Movie Franchise

Cuarón Directed The Best Harry Potter Movie

Aside from his Academy Award wins, Cuarón’s experience with a different film series from the United Kingdom demonstrates how perfect he is for Bond 26. Cuarón directed the third Harry Potter movie — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — which is considered by many to be the best film in the franchise. He helped shift Harry Potter into a darker tone that it benefited from in future movies. However, Cuarón certainly did the best job of balancing the lightheartedness of the series with its darker elements, which is partly why Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the best.

At the time of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban‘s release, critics and audiences alike lauded Cuarón for masterfully transforming the film series into something darker with more complex storytelling. Cuarón was able to take what was considered by many a children’s franchise and make it into something that appealed to adults, as well. Even though Harry Potter produced five more movies after Cuarón’s work, his is still regarded as the best. So, it’s safe to say that Cuarón can also help the James Bond franchise’s transition from the Broccoli family to Amazon.

Alfonso Cuarón Making James Bond 26 Would Be A Reᴀssuring Statement Of Intent From Amazon MGM

The Bond Franchise Is In Safe Hands With Cuarón At The Helm

Fans’ concerns about the future of the James Bond franchise after Amazon took creative control over it are valid. Nevertheless, if the reports about Cuarón directing Bond 26 are true, perhaps the transition won’t be so bad, after all. Of course, Amazon MGM Studios is still likely to try to profit off of the movie series as much as possible, even if that means sacrificing quality.

The fact that Amazon is reportedly trying to get Cuarón on board to direct Bond 26 also suggests that the studio is making an effort to produce quality projects.

Cuarón is such a fantastic filmmaker, though, meaning the 26th James Bond movie is in safe hands. The fact that Amazon is reportedly trying to get Cuarón on board to direct Bond 26 also suggests that the studio is making an effort to produce quality projects. Still, only time will tell how it all plays out.
