Quentin Tarantino is one of the most legendary movie directors of all time, but it has been six years since his last release, and we’re still none the wiser as to when his next film will hit screens, or what it will be about. Having produced classics such as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill, there is no doubt Tarantino is one of the most impactful filmmakers the industry has ever seen. His unique style of storytelling has influenced countless directors, and Tarantino’s best movie characters remain iconic, proving just how much he has changed Hollywood over the years.
Unfortunately, his highly anticipated tenth movie remains a mystery, but there have been several rumors about his upcoming plans. Just recently, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was picked up by Netflix, and while Tarantino won’t be directing, he did write the script. As a result, it’s obvious he still has plenty of ideas in his locker, giving us a bit of an insight into what his next cinematic project may be. Although nothing is confirmed, his axed scripts and rumored sequels offer an idea of what could be next, and when his tenth film may happen.
Quentin Tarantino Canceled The Movie Critic: What Was It About & Why Isn’t It Happening
Brad Pitt Was Rumored To Reunite With Tarantino & Rumors Suggested It Could Have Turned Into The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Spinoff
While Tarantino’s next film remains up in the air, The Movie Critic was initially penciled to be his tenth movie before it was canceled. Although the director himself never officially revealed why the project was axed, reports suggest that Quentin Tarantino canceled The Movie Critic as he was unhappy with the script and wanted to go out on top. The director has spoken at length about his 10-movie plan, claiming he will retire once he has made 10 films, meaning whatever he directs next is rumored to be his last, hence wanting to craft the best story possible.
It may also be the reason he has chosen not to direct the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel despite having a large role in its creation, as he isn’t quite ready to hang up his boots. Details about The Movie Critic have been limited, but it was allegedly set to feature Brad Pitt in a prominent role after winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his latest collaboration with Tarantino. The director was also seemingly looking for a younger male star to lead the project, but it’s unclear if he had anyone in mind.
The brief synopsis of the film suggested it would focus on a cynical movie critic writing for a pornographic magazine, with the plot taking place in the 1970s. Given Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was set in the 1960s and also featured Brad Pitt, there are rumors that the newly announced spinoff borrows ideas from The Movie Critic, although that won’t become clear until the movie releases. Either way, The Movie Critic in its original form looks unlikely to ever see the light of day, mainly because of Tarantino’s desire to make the perfect final movie.
Quentin Tarantino Has A Lot Of Potential Options For His Next Movie
He Has Possible Sequels Alongside The Chance To Return To Unfinished Projects Or Try A New Genre
With The Movie Critic‘s cancelation, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Tarantino’s next film will be, but he has no shortage of choices. Despite not being at the helm of the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spinoff, it doesn’t mean he couldn’t take charge of another sequel. Many fans have hopes of seeing Tarantino greenlight Kill Bill 3, and although it has been two decades since the last installment, the franchise did get a 15-minute anime short that showcased just how great another installment would be.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) |

Some of his other hits would be harder to adapt as most of them are suited to being self-contained stories, but seeing a more modern version of something like Django Unchained or Inglourious Basterds could still be entertaining. Additionally, Tarantino has had plenty of other projects that he has scrapped alongside The Movie Critic, so potentially reviving one of these films and giving it his full attention could still make for an interesting final film. He could even try out a different genre, as there is still unexplored potential for him in the horror or comedy sphere.
Plenty of Tarantino’s greatest movies feature some hilarious dialog, and while it’s not his traditional style of storytelling, blending comedy with his genius plots could be a fascinating prospect. Likewise, Tarantino has referenced his desire to enter the horror industry in the past, and given how creative and bold his previous work has been, closing his career out with a terrifying thriller would feel pretty fitting. Regardless of what he chooses to go with in the end, he has almost endless possibilities for his coveted tenth film.
Quentin Tarantino’s Next Movie May Not Happen For A While
His Comments Regarding His Son Indicates His Next Movie May Be At Least A Year Away From Starting Production
Considering Tarantino has seemingly started from scratch regarding his next project, it looks like it could be a while before we see another movie from the filmmaker. The gap between Jackie Brown and Kill Bill: Volume 1 is the longest interval between Tarantino movies, but the wait for his tenth film will be even longer, adding to the anticipation. Not only is there seemingly no indication of what his next idea is or if he’s even come up with it yet, but according to Variety, he’s in no rush as he wants his son on set.
With the filmmaker seemingly winding down his career, it’s understandable he’ll want to give his children fond memories of his directing tenure while it’s still active.
Tarantino claimed, “I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6. That way he’ll know what’s going on, he’ll be there, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.” With the filmmaker seemingly winding down his career, it’s understandable he’ll want to give his children fond memories of his directing tenure while it’s still active. Additionally, the possibility of Tarantino continuing his cameo tradition in his tenth movie would make it all the more special.
Unfortunately for us, that means his next film won’t begin production until at least 2026, suggesting the grueling wait will continue for a while longer.
Will Quentin Tarantino’s Next Movie Be His Last One?
According To His 10-Movie Plan, His Next Film Will Be The Last Of His Iconic Career
A lot has been made about Tarantino’s 10-movie plan, but there remain questions about whether it will really be his last movie. Plenty of Hollywood figures have gone back on promises in the past, but Tarantino seems adamant about only making ten movies, as he considers Kill Bill 1 and 2 a two-part film, rather than separate entries. ᴀssuming he stays true to his word, then whatever he does next could truly be the end of his incredible career, meaning it will be a huge spectacle. However, there is still hope that his last outing won’t necessarily mean retirement.
The fact he wrote the script for David Fincher’s upcoming OUATIH follow-up means Tarantino may still be involved in other projects, so long as he isn’t directing. He could take on a producer or writing role without breaking his self-imposed rule, meaning his creativity could still be felt in other films after his last dance. While I’d love to see this, the most important thing is that his next project lives up to the hype, and hopefully, Tarantino’s final movie features actors such as Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Madsen, who have been a pivotal part of his legacy.
What Is Quentin Tarantino Doing Next?
Tarantino Is Currently Writing A Stage Play & Could Potentially Delve Into TV
Although details of his next movie are unknown, Tarantino revealed at the start of 2025 that he is developing a stage play. He has past experience in this realm, having made his Broadway debut in the late 1990s, but this is certainly a big change from his more recent work. Tarantino even suggested his play could become his final movie if the reception is positive, which would be a shocking turn of events. It’s not clear what the play will be about or when it will be released, but it appears to be his next project as of now.
There were also previous talks of Tarantino trying his hand at TV, with his Bounty Law project gaining some traction, but there have been no major updates on the show in over a year. He is also working on a short тιтled Love Birds in Bondage, and while he doesn’t seem to be a part of the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spinoff going forward, he was undoubtedly a major part of its creation. Clearly, Quentin Tarantino doesn’t have any shortage of work, but all eyes remain on that tenth and potentially final movie.
