Warning: Mild SPOILERS lie ahead for A Minecraft Movie! With the first movie set for another big weekend at the box office, Warner Bros. has seemingly confirmed A Minecraft Movie 2 is in the works. Adapting Mojang’s open-world sandbox for the screen, the action-adventure film got off to a strong start at the box ofifce, having grossed over $350 million worldwide at the time of writing. Prior to the movie’s release, director Jared Hess was already teasing his ideas for A Minecraft Movie 2, particularly after the post-credits scene set one up.
Now, in a recent interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Warner Bros. execs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy were asked about the possibility of sequels to both Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie after their box office successes. The duo seemingly confirmed both movies are gearing up to get sequels, noting that while “the ink might not be dry on the deals yet“, announcements will be made “imminently” that Tim Burton’s hit horror-comedy sequel and video game adaptation are getting follow-ups.
What De Luca & Abdy’s Update Means For A Minecraft Movie 2
The Sequel May Be Closer To Happening Than Expected
Though it may not have been a critical hit, it certainly shouldn’t come as a surprise that WB is already looking to move ahead with Minecraft 2. In just its opening weekend, A Minecraft Movie broke multiple box office records, including surpᴀssing Five Nights at Freddy’s for the best Thursday night preview haul for a video game adaptation, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation. Additionally, the movie quickly went viral thanks to videos and stories of rowdy audiences in theaters.
Beyond its financial performance thus far, Jared Hess has teased in multiple interviews that he has plans for Minecraft 2. Prior to its record-breaking opening weekend, the director praised the “infinite” possibilities to come from its source material, as well as the “amazing mods and characters and biomes” not yet explored, while he confirmed in an interview after the movie’s release that talks were already underway for the sequel, and that its story would focus on Jack Black’s Steve and Alex, who was introduced in A Minecraft Movie‘s post-credits.
Considering the large scale of the first movie, it seems likely that Minecraft 2 wouldn’t release for another couple of years, though the fact that deals are currently being set is promising for how long it will take the sequel to release. The first movie took three months to shoot and, subsequently, a year in post-production before its release, a reasonable timetable for a CGI-heavy film like it. Given A Minecraft Movie came with multiple A-list talent leading the charge, and Alex rumored to have been voiced by Kate McKinnon, scheduling will be the biggest factor in the sequel’s release.
Our Take On A Minecraft Movie 2 Already Moving Forward
Striking While The Iron’s H๏τ
While I did expect the sequel announcement to come eventually, I am admittedly a little surprised Warner Bros. seems to already be putting the pieces together for A Minecraft Movie 2 to happen. In one sense, it’s a smart call to make it as soon as possible, considering just how popular the first movie already is, though admittedly, a quick turnaround often makes me concerned about quality control. Since it seems like Hess was already planning the sequel in his head on the first movie, though, I hope the combination of that and feedback for the first film makes Minecraft 2 worth the speedy development.
