10 Classic Godzilla Storylines We’d Love To See In The MonsterVerse

A number of classic storylines from Godzilla‘s 70-year past on the silver screen would make for excellent additions to the ever-expanding lore of the MonsterVerse. Godzilla himself has gone through several iterations, ranging from dark and terrifying to silly and family-friendly. Likewise, his timeline has been reset many times, with some of his movies acting as part of a continuing narrative and others ignoring everything except for the 1954 Godzilla movie.

As a result, Godzilla has been through the ringer as far as adventures and action are concerned. In addition to the myriad monstrous villains he’s gone toe-to-toe with, Big G has dealt with everything from anti-nuclear bacteria, alien species, and time travel. Some stories are far more convoluted than others, but with Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire bringing the MonsterVerse further away from the grounded, semi-realistic tones of Godzilla (2014), some of the best storylines and battles from Godzilla’s history are now in play, and would be fun additions to the expanded lore.

Progressive тιтan Evolution

Several Godzilla Enemies Have Taken Multiple Forms

A common trope from Godzilla’s movie history is a monster undergoing rapid evolution before reaching its final, ᴅᴇᴀᴅliest form. The best example is Destoroyah, which began as a Pre-Cambrian crustacean before the Oxygen Destroyer mutated it into the demonic “Perfect Form” creature that killed Godzilla Junior in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Godzilla himself even underwent a similar process in Shin Godzilla, and the smog monster Hedorah shifted shape rapidly before achieving its mᴀssive, sludge-like final form. It would be entertaining to see a villainous тιтan go through multiple changes, not dissimilar from how Godzilla himself has evolved in the MonsterVerse.

тιтan Genetic Experimentation

Biollante Was A Product Of Splicing Godzilla’s Cells With A Plant

Biollante's plant beast form from Godzilla vs. Biollante

The тιтans of the MonsterVerse are famously ancient creatures except for the robotic Mechagodzilla. With Monarch still discovering more every day about the тιтans and the Hollow Earth, it feels inevitable that someone will (if they haven’t already) attempt to unlock the тιтans’ genetic code as a way to achieve eternal life, harness nuclear power, or for some other nefarious purpose. Splicing cells created the plant behemoth Biollante in 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante, and even if the end result isn’t Biollante herself, a powerful genetic monstrosity could be a terrifying new challenge for the keeper of the natural order, Godzilla.

тιтan Mind-Control

тιтans Under The Control Of Humans Is A Terrifying Thought

Manda attacks the city in Destroy All Monsters

On many occasions in Godzilla’s history, monsters have become destructive due to mind control of some kind, oftentimes thanks to an invading alien race hellbent on using giant monsters to take over the world. The concept of a mind-controlled тιтan is intriguing (not counting MV Mechagodzilla here because a human never wielded his power), because thus far in the MonsterVerse they’ve been shown to be intelligent animals who respond to an alpha’s call, but who act independently as forces of nature. The notion of a human with an agenda wielding their godlike power could yield some tremendous тιтan battles.

Godzilla Vs. Everybody

In Godzilla: Final Wars, Big G Took On All Other Monsters

Godzilla vs Keizer Ghidorah in Godzilla Final Wars

Godzilla: Final Wars is far from a perfect Godzilla movie, but you can’t be a fan of Godzilla and not appreciate his global rampage taking out both enemies and allies under the control of the Xiliens (all set to a ripping hard rock track). The concept of Godzilla running through the planet’s monsters sounds like so much fun, and we even got a taste of it in Godzilla X Kong when he took out Scylla and Tiamat, and fought through Kong and Shimo. But there are far more тιтans out there who haven’t stepped to the king.

6

Son of Godzilla

Godzilla Has Raised Multiple Young Versions Of Himself In His History

Godzilla Junior from the Heisei Era

A common criticism of the MonsterVerse so far is that it hasn’t focused enough on Godzilla. Since Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the franchise has been extremely Kong-focused as far as building backstory and personality are concerned. It’s high time that Godzilla got a chance to shine, and one of the best ways to do it would be to give him a son, as has happened several times in his greater film history. A more badᴀss juvenile version of Godzilla (nobody wants a Minilla reboot) could be supremely entertaining if done right in the MonsterVerse.

5

Godzilla And His Buddies Team Up

In Destroy All Monsters, Everybody Ganged Up On King Ghidorah

Monsters in Destroy All Monsters.

So far, we’ve seen Godzilla team up with Mothra, Kong, and both at the same time to deal with the world-ending threat d’jour. However, it would be far cooler to see Godzilla lead a тιтan army against some next-level threat to Earth’s existence, which happened in the kaiju classic Destroy All Monsters. Seeing Godzilla at the head of a battle group that includes Kong, Rodan, Mothra, Behemoth, Shimo, Methusaleh all going up against a planet-altering boogeymonster like Destoroyah or Hedorah seems like a natural finale for the Monsterverse, whether the franchise ends permanently or is reborn afterwards.

4

The Classic Anguirus And Godzilla Tag-Team

Godzilla’s Loyal Ally Was Part Of His Past In The MonsterVerse

A now-famous Easter egg in Godzilla: King of the Monsters reveals that the ankylosaurus-like Anguirus did once exist in the MonsterVerse. His skeleton was seen in Godzilla’s subterranean lair deep in the Hollow Earth, so at one point in the ancient past, Godzilla and Anguirus were likely allies (I’m choosing to believe that’s the case versus Godzilla killing him and leaving his body there). It’s time for another member of Anguirus’ species to come into the picture so Godzilla can get his spiky, tuck-and-rolling lieutenant back for the next big battle.

3

A Humanoid Alien Invasion

Godzilla Has Fought Off Aliens Multiple Times

With man-made тιтan augmentations, anti-gravity tag-team battles, and human-тιтan psychic connections all on the board after Godzilla X Kong, it’s safe to say that there is very little that is off-limits for the MonsterVerse. If that’s the case, it would be awesome to see one of Godzilla’s oldest and most common plot devices brought into the fold: the humanoid alien invaders. On multiple occasions, a human-like race of aliens has attempted to use monsters to take over the planet, only to be thwarted by Godzilla.

Mechagodzilla (weapon)

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla

This would be one of the more “out there” ideas to come to the MonsterVerse, but it’s already been established that Ghidorah is not of Earth, so naturally there must be other life-sustaining planets in the galaxy. Having a race of aliens drop in on Earth would be plenty of reason for the planet’s primary defender and keeper of the natural order to go to war, especially if they brought an alien kaiju with them. I will keep manifesting Gigan’s MonsterVerse appearance until it happens!

2

Godzilla Vs. Hedorah

One Of Godzilla’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅliest Foes Is Ideal For The MonsterVerse

Godzilla Fights Hedorah

If Godzilla is the defender of the planet’s natural order, then Hedorah, who is directly a product of human pollution, is the most natural foil there could be. He came across as sort of campy due to his design during the Showa Era (and his brief Godzilla: Final Wars appearance), but his human body count was extremely high, and he truly had Godzilla on the ropes with his final form. A modern redesign for the MonsterVerse could make Hedorah a uniquely fearsome villain, especially if his sludge-like body renders Godzilla’s atomic breath useless. тιтan team-up, anyone?

1

A Benevolent Robot тιтan

The MonsterVerse Needs Jet Jaguar

Jet Jaguar from Godzilla vs. Megalon

It’s possible that the MonsterVerse has already set up the arrival of Jet Jaguar, and if not then they need to. Mechagodzilla’s creation opened the door to basically any and all robotic kaiju, as that technology now exists in the universe. Monarch has already dabbled in similar tech with Kong’s B.E.A.S.T. glove, and a benevolent robot like Jet Jaguar is a perfectly natural next step for the monster-aiding organization to take. Jet Jaguar only made one movie appearance, but his cult hero status among Godzilla fans would make him a welcome addition to the MonsterVerse.
