Chris Pratt’s New Sci-Movie Continues An 11-Year-Old Career Trend That Began With Guardians Of The Galaxy

Chris Pratt’s upcoming movie Mercy will be the next film in a long line of science fiction movies that the actor has starred in. Throughout his career, Pratt has continuously starred in sci-fi films. This is somewhat surprising, since he first gained recognition for his roles in comedic projects. Pratt played Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation, and was one of the funniest characters in the popular sitcom. He starred in every season of Parks and Recreation, but was on the rise as a major star in Hollywood by the end of the series.

Pratt’s rise as a leading man was due to his role as Star-Lord/Peter Quill in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Since 2014, Pratt has starred in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. However, even outside the MCU, Pratt has consistently shown an interest in the sci-fi genre. Some of Chris Pratt’s non-MCU movies include The Electric State, The Tomorrow War, and Pᴀssengers. Therefore, Pratt’s upcoming movie Mercy will be the actor’s latest sci-fi film.

Mercy Is The Newest Addition To Chris Pratt’s Sci-Fi Filmography

Mercy Is An Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie About A Detective Who Has To Prove His Innocence

Mercy will continue an 11-year-old tradition of Pratt consistently starring as a leading man in science fiction films. Technically, Her came out in 2013, but Pratt only appeared as a supporting character in the movie. Therefore, Guardians of the Galaxy was the first movie that really started this long-running career trend for Pratt. Through his films within the MCU and outside of the major superhero franchise, it is clear that Pratt loves starring in major science fiction movies.

Not long after he last appeared in Netflix’s The Electric State, the trailer for Mercy debuted at CinemaCon 2025. While the trailer was not released online, Screen Rant was present at the event to report on Pratt’s upcoming sci-fi project. In Mercy, Pratt plays a detective in a futuristic society who must prove his innocence after being accused of his wife’s murder. In the film, the Mercy program is used to determine whether a person is innocent or guilty, and Pratt’s character has 90 minutes to convince the program he’s innocent.

How Mercy Will Be Different From Chris Pratt’s Previous Sci-Fi Movies

Mercy Seems Like It Will Be A Grounded Sci-Fi Movie

While not too many details are currently know about Mercy, it seems like it will be a lot different from Pratt’s previous sci-fi films. Compared to films like The Electric State and The Tomorrow War, it seems like Mercy will be much more grounded, rather than an action-packed epic. In the film, the Mercy program will be monitoring him throughout the entire 90 minutes and Pratt’s character will have to keep his guilt level below the 92% threshold.

Mercy has a very unique premise that could make for a thrilling and anxiety-inducing watch.

Therefore, if he is innocent, he will have to keep his anxiety levels down. However, if he is indeed guilty of the crime, Pratt’s character will have to outsmart the program. Mercy has a very unique premise that could make for a thrilling and anxiety-inducing watch. Based on the description of the CinemaCon trailer, Mercy could end up being one of the most unique movies of Pratt’s career. Therefore, it is great to see that Chris Pratt still has an interest in starring in sci-fi movies with fresh premises.
